Gave the rating as poor not because of the actual accommodation which was clean and modern although the tiny wardrobe was stuffed with spare bedding so nowhere to hang anything. Were advised to book our meal as it was 'full house'. When we went into the dining room there was just one other couple there. Hardly bursting at the seams. My husband's lasagne was cold and there was no meat in it. Manager apologised and offered to rectify it but husband had lost his appetite by then. My vegetable curry was nice but was obviously a readymeal. Not once did we see the 'chef' and hardly smelt any cooking. All very odd. We'd opted for eggs Benedict for breakfast. A load of cold sauce dolloped over small poached eggs on baps. It was awkward when paying for the food on leaving but it's too long and complicated to go into (husband's meal not charged). It's a shame as the hotel has obviously had money spent on it but let down by the (we think) absence of a chef. The staff though pleasant enough, to my mind haven't been in the hospitality business very long.

The manager or owner was very welcoming. He seemed to be running it by himself. He checked us in and kindly advised that the happy hour had 5 minutes left so we quickly dropped our bags in our room and headed back to the bar and he then went behind the bar to serve our drinks. Later on he came to take our food order and then he brought it to our table later. He was incredibly hard working but very friendly and helpful. The meal was fabulous as well. Our room was compact but we were in the attic room I think. However, everything was clean and tidy and the bed was comfortable. There were big fluffy towels on the bed and there was even a chocolate on top of them both! There were also a generous amount of tea and coffee in the room and two packets of biscuits too. You don't often get that in more expensive hotels.

Very friendly and efficient staff. Free car parking and WiFi. Nice bar, restaurant and general areas. Our room was nice but bathroom in need of refurbishment. Basic breakfast that can't really be classed as continental. Good location and would stop again.

We booked up for the night so we could stay over after the Christmas Market in matlock. Reception was friendly. Good parking, free WiFi and nice and warm when entering. We were given a very small attic room with en suite shower room. A bit difficult getting into bed with the slope of the ceiling so be careful not to bump head or shoulders. Room was clean and warm.Bedding was clean but mattress was very firm and base creaky so quite uncomfortable .Tv was a bit too small to see from the bed. Kettle in room with tea and coffee. Fan and a heater provided in the room. One chair, a hanging rail for coats. Clean Towels and chocolates left in the room. A little soap, shower gel and shampoo were provided. Bar was nice and relaxing. Good selection of drinks. Nice to see a family run place with their child laughing and playing in the dining area. Booked in for breakfast but skipped it due to us being tired and wanting to get home so can't comment on that. If you just need a place to bed down for one night at a cheap rate then it may be for you. No frills.

Nice hotel and good value for money for December. Restaurant quiet but food lovely. Only just over a 5 minute walk into the centre. This hotel is on the main road but could hardly hear any traffic noise.

This place would not get a single star even if it was located in Blackpool and only charging £40 a night. A total disgrace. Please, DO NOT STAY HERE....... it is nothing like they describe!! We couldn’t even get a cup of coffee or toast on the morning we departed, despite notices saying breakfast started at 8 am. We couldn’t even find ONE member of staff anywhere in the hotel and the dining room was locked and in darkness. See below for a list of problems we found during the two almost sleepless nights. Creaky bed, rock hard bed. Tiny wardrobe approx 18 inches wide. Handle came off drawer. Flaky paint on wardrobe. Poor lighting ...only 2 ceiling lights. Very small room with little natural light. Mouldy grouting in bathroom. Bath panel scuffed and dirty. All biscuits broken and out of date Drawers chipped and flaking. No hooks for coats. Light switch behind the bloody wardrobe. Windows were filthy and difficult to see out. Windows do not seal and are continuously draughty. Outside light also blocked by trees literally inches away. Ridiculous INVENTORY in room that doesn’t match the contents listed! No-one serviced the room whilst we we were out...... no cleaning or attempt to replace tea/coffee. Despite website stating that cooked breakfast was available when we booked, we were told on arrival that this was not an option. They didn’t have the common decency to tell us before we arrived. They accepted our booking under false pretences. Happy hour in the bar DOES NOT include soft drinks or zero alcohol beers etc. Bed is not a double as advertised. Two single beds shoved together with a sheet thrown over to hide the gap Noisy compressor from bar area can be heard through the poor fitting window which doesn’t seal, letting in cold air and noise all night! All floors outside the room creak so that you can hear everyone walking past your room at 3 am! BREAKFAST IS A JOKE! Supermarket cheap sliced bread, a tray of old cold stale croissants, a few tubs of sugar laden yoghurt, cereal and fruit flavoured juices. No hot option whatsoever despite there being a bowl of brown sauce sachets on the table. This is NOT a continental breakfast by any stretch of the imagination. AVOID THIS PLACE, PLEASE. FIND SOMEWHERE THAT IS FIT FOR PURPOSE

We have just returned from spending our wedding anniversary at this hotel and the surrounding area, we was allowed to park in there car park as we arrived before check in time and go to explore the town which is very helpful. When we had checked in were offered 2 free drinks for our anniversary which was a generous gesture and we were also welcomed warmly. Onto the room we had some chocolates left for us as a gift and the room perfect and very clean, the bathroom with tj double bath and shower was amazing.

A clean if a little small room in the attic. Bed was comfortable, tv far too small to be viewed properly from the bed. Looked recently refurbished in parts and was a tidy hotel. The welcome wasn't unfriendly just not very welcoming. All through my brief stay there only seemed to be one person on duty at a time, serving at the desk, bar and as waitress. There was not a welcome feel about the hotel, the staff seemed ambivalent to our presence as if they had to put up with us. Dinner in the hotel, which had to be pre booked and ordered on arrival was very nice. Breakfast was very disappointing. Could barely call it a continental breakfast. Croissants and toast for me, not much else on offer. Knives and forks on the tables suggested more might be on offer but nothing materialised. Not sure why price booking breakfast slots was necessary as it was 100% self service.

Very small bathroom and bedroom, no wardrobes..just a small rail...shower and basin very small. Larger and taller people would struggle with the room we had. Other family had a room much bigger. Beware paying through booking.com as if there are any issues management can use the fact that you booked with booking.com to refuse any refunds. It has put me off using booking.com itself. To ensure consistent rooms would probably look for a larger chain hotel as you know what you are getting for your money.
