We stayed here as part of our cycling Tour of New Zealand. The views refused to appear and we had to accept that sometimes you win some and sometimes you don't. Mordor was more the outlook for our day which is a real shame. Having said that, the low cloud and drizzle did mean hunkering down in the cosy rooms... More

Reception was polite and helpful. Views of Mt. Ngauruhoe and Tongariro National Park from our room were spectacular. Rooms definitely need updating. Mattress and furnishings are very old. Dining room had wooden tables, where so much guck had built up on the surface, the skin on your hands and elbows stuck to it a bit. With that, we thought we... More

We are a group who goes walking somewhere every year. We found the Skotel staff to be very friendly and helpful and the facilities good - we were both in the backpackers and the cabins. Nice and warm and the spa was great after a days walking. Backpackers kitchen was a bit cramped so we moved to cabins (no oven... More

I stayed for one night, arriving quite late. Fortunately the restaurant was still open and did good food. Reception staff was very helpful and informative. Restaurant staff could have been a bit better. Great views

Location - very good place to start your trekking walks - just at the begin of many walks tracks. Also view from windows - both from cabin log and restaurant - excellent - nice surprise, especially when you arrive at night For cabin log, where we stayed - same disadvantages: 1./ very small bathroom - like in campervan, difficult to... We arrived at the hotel in torrential rain - but found the staff welcoming and helpful - We had booked budget rooms - 2, advertised as with tea and coffee - but one room did not have this - though the other had a TV etc. Beds were comfy - both doubles but the layout of the room weird with... More

I stayed at Skotel for 2 nights during my visit to the Tongariro national park. I booked a backpacker room for a single person and although the room had 3 beds, I had the room to myself. The hotel has a great view of Mt. Ngaurhoe and the wooden floor and walls of the hotel makes lot of groaning and... More

Good bunker beds, but the third bed in the backpacker room was terrible. Very soft mattress. Acoustic between bedrooms are quite 'good' you can quite a lot of noises from neighbor rooms. Kitchen is ok, basic but has all it is needed. Living room was looking quite tired with video tapes.

We stayed here for one night and thought our room well appointed, maybe a bit small, but with a beautiful view across to Mt Ngauruhoe (Mount Doom in the Lord of the Rings films). Excellent laundry facilities which were greatly appreciated as we had been travelling for some time. All the staff were very friendly and the food was good. Views... More

Skotel was established in the early 60s by a group of keen skiers who wanted the convenience of accommodation close to the ski-fields but more comfort than the ski lodges of that time.
