I stayed at the Thunderbird for a few months on a business assignment. The rooms are decent (clean and equipped with a small fridge and microwave), the food in the cafeteria was overpriced and not good, but my real problem was with most of the staff. I'm a friendly person and rarely have issues with anyone. Though there were a... More

Considering that this is the only lodge in the canyon and that it is a "lodge" not a full on hotel, it was fine. 1) Rooms were clean (very basic and kind of old but clean). For instance: The sheets were clearly old but even though I am a picky person, I could tell they were really really clean so... More

Coming into the run-down city of Chinle, with its graffiti-covered buildings and dust-blown streets, I did not expect the leafy, peaceful setting that is Thunderbird Lodge. What a soothing place. Our cozy room faced a shaded, green square where you could sit in the afternoon and read a book. Across the parking lot is a pretty park with grills for... More

This is the only motel within the park at Canyon de Chelly (although two other apparently good choices are only a mile or so away just outside the boundary). The rooms are comfortable, and the location is excellent. It was very quiet and peaceful. The lodge has a cafeteria dining room, which was OK for breakfast. There are better choices... More

If you are visiting Canyon de Chelly, this location is fantastic...very close. However, it is an older hotel and probably needs some updating. You are definitely paying for the location as it does seem high for what you get. The room was clean enough, but loud plumbing. We had difficulty accessing the wi-fi. We ate breakfast in the cafeteria and... More

Thunderbird Lodge is inside the Canyon de Chelly park boundary, just past the visitor center. It was a surprisingly nice place, especially compared to the Best Western nearby in Chinle. One story, large rooms, clean, remodeled, wifi. They arrange tours of the canyon in their nice gift shop. Price was right. More

Thunderbird Lodge is one of only a handful of hotels to stay in on the Grand Canyon Rim (south). Need to book any room on the rim early. I booked this room a month out, and it was the only one they had so we paid $200 (with tax) to have a Canyon view. The room was very small and... More

Charming setting and buildings. Staff seem to be indifferent (as they were elsewhere within the area) to visitor needs and not empowered to make decisions. Rates were high. We got an OLD room, historic stone building but the historic plumbing left a lot to be desired. Hubby got brown water from the shower for several minutes, a stream of water... More

This is one of my favorite places, but don't expect modern rooms or amenities. The lodge is just inside the western boundary of Canyon de Chelly National Monument. The site is shaded and green; there are no views of the canyon. Rooms are basic and the plumbing, as proclaimed by signs in the rooms, is "historic." Food is available at... More

We loved the scenic setting of this hotel. Right near the entrance to the Canyon. The tour was handy, the cafeteria had great food. Our tour guide, Ron, took us on the all-day tour and it was fantastic from beginning to end. More
