I have been staying at the SF Youth Hostel at Fisherman's Wharf for 13 years! This place is a perfect place to for a home based to explore San Francisco. The rooms are clean, the common areas are welcoming, clean and cozy. The views are fantastic and the access to the city through public transportation is wonderful!

Four showers for 100 women makes for a terrible experience. As a fellow traveller said: "camping showers." The staff is nasty: they could careless about anything unless you are an attractive female and then they will give you "special attention." We've visited SFO many times, but this trip decided to show our 13 yr old what dorm living will be like when she goes to college in a few yrs. This was absolutely the best experience for her! The location inside Fort Mason is quite special, as it's a historic location sort of embedded in a park. We stayed in the 12-bed dorm which was OKish (some snorers as expected), though there was an inconvenient lack of wallplugs. The bathroom amenities need an upgrade.
