I knew I would love Hale Ho'okipa the second I stepped inside, because it smelled just like my family's old house in the Catskills - I immediately felt right at home. I then proceeded to pretty much make every mistake that a guest in a B&B could possibly make. We had late arrivals and early departures so I was unable... More

We rented the Rose Room for a week at the end of December 2011. It is a very charming bedroom, looks like in a fairy tale :) The place is very clean, cosy. It is very welcoming and we felt home as soon as we arrived. Cherie and Laine who took care of us during our trip were very happy... More

We live on Maui and take an upcountry vacation a couple of times each year. We always stay at Hale Ho'okipa Inn in Makawao. The inn is a wonderful historic home that will take you back in time. The inn has kept all the original charm the home had when it was built over 85 years ago. It is listed... More

My husband and I first found Hale Ho'okipa several years ago when traveling to Maui with my mother. We wanted to stay Upcountry because it was the closest location to most of our relatives. Yes, we are from Maui! My great-grandparents emigrated from the Azores Islands in the late 1880s. My grandparents, parents, and my siblings and I were all... More

My wife and I first stayed at Hale Ho'okipa in January 2011...returned in October 2011...and have rented out the entire B&B for a week in April 2012 to share it with our family. Obviously, we love it. The location -- in the upcountry on the flanks of Haleakala is, for us, the perfect spot on Maui. Beaches...hiking...horeseback riding...ziplining...Maui Arts &... More

I have yet to write a negative review. I'd rather spend my time promoting positive experiences and great places than dwelling on the decisions that didn't go well. For Hale Ho'okipa Inn, I'm going to make an exception. I knew we were in trouble when the sign at the front door read, "No Shoes Allowed". This is a pet peeve... More

Aloha, "Mahalo for removing shoes" will be seen on the lanais of 90% of Hawaiian homes and probably all of the b&b's.,( I asked all my b&b friends, and they all ask guests to leave shoes outside) It's local style, island custom, and it shows respect to your host to do so.. If a guest "knows they are in trouble"... More

We spent 2 nights in the Jasmine Room of this historic B&B. The location was great -15 minutes from airport, less than an hour to see sunrise on Haleakala, and easy start for the Road to Hana. Our room was clean, quiet, comfortable, and beautifully decorated with art and antiques. The generous buffet breakfast was delicious - hawaiian breads, jams and... More

Lovely old home, with nice grounds and lots of interesting period furnishings. I didn't make a reservation ahead of time, but was fortunate to find an opening. Proprietor and staff are very accommodating and friendly, but as a guest you can have privacy and 'alone' time. Stayed in the Rose Suite, and loved having the separate entrance to the porch... More

This was our first trip to Hawaii. We chose this B & B based on TripAdvisor and Kim Grant's guidebook, "Hawaii: An Explorer's Guide" and it was an excellent choice. This place is great if you are not into the big busy resorts. There is no view of the water but there is a beach 15 minutes away. Makawoa has... More
