Being a Hawaii resident and frequent traveller who has stayed in many of the finest resorts in Hawaii and around the world my wife and I are very good judges when it comes to Hawaii Hotels. There are many great things you can say about the Mauna Kea and there are also some bad things. Overall It's a great property... More

I recently spent 4 nights at the Mauna Kea with my wife, and we had a wonderful time. I was most impressed by how many of the little things this place gets right. There were a number of understated details that really makes this hotel special. I liked the fact that the housekeepers refilled our ice bucket every day. The... More

I have travelled to the Kohala coast twice yearly since 1987. Yes,before king kamehamea. Only consider Mauna kea or Mauna Lani. Forget the rest. Kea =better beach, more kids (brats), better evening bar (Copper Bar), and more quaint rooms. Mauna Lanier has better restaurants, more quiet, more serene, more mature patrons, but no beach worth visiting. Golf personnel at Lani... More

the Luau. As other reviews have already described all there is to this hotel (but I want to add a couple of photos esp. the beautiful birds in the cage and all the art sculptures on the property) and some luau photos. A nice place to stay but when I come back again, I think I will check another property.... More

I stayed at the Mauna Kea as a child and had fond memories. We stayed there again in late 2005 and it was fine. During this stay, in December 2011, we definitely saw the decline that others speak of in these reviews. The pool and hot tub badly need modernization. But what is worse then the need-to-update ground situation is... More

What a place. So glad we stayed there. firstly, it felt like a privilege to stay in this architectural masterpiece. WHen we arrived, we couldn't believe the beauty of the place and the magic never really stopped. everywhere you go, it is beautiful and has been so thoughtfully and masterfully designed. WE stayed at the plumaria beach club wing which... More

I was so excited to return to Mauna Kea for a before Christmas get-away. I guess its true what they say about expectations.....never good to have them. In just the short 10 months since we last visited I was surprised to see the property looking tired, worn, and understaffed, especially with it being the busy and expensive holiday season. It... I have been coming to this hotel for 25 years, and now come with my wife and small kids. It has one of the very best beaches in Hawaii, a true classic that reflects the fact that it is one of the original resorts on the outer Hawaiian Islands. This alone distinguishes the Mauna Kea but so too does its... More

I guess it all depends what you want out of your Hawaiin vacation. The Mauna Kea was just what we were looking for and except for a few lapses in service, was a dream come true. We enjoyed being there in the off season even if it meant less than stellar staff and fewer activities. We were able to have... More

We spent five days on Kona post Thanksgiving at the Mauna Kea and although the property is huge and has a great beach, wow is this place tired. We went to the luau which was more of a tired history lesson than the vibrant colorful dinners we have experienced on say Maui. The whole place is tired and only had... More
