Property's Favourite Review
Wow, I knew from looking at the pictures of this B&B that it was going to be lovely but nothing compares to actually arriving there. The innkeepers were all so kind and accommodating. I don't think I've ever felt more welcomed at a hotel. We asked if we could drop our luggage off at the desk early on our check in date as we were going to volcanoes national park and they generously and kindly accepted our request and even moved our luggage into our room prior to our late arrival. We arrived back at the inn late that evening and saw the most beautiful starry sky, outlook over Kona, and the ocean in the background. It was glorious. The view from the inn night and day is indescribable. The inn is so quiet and calm at night I had the best night's sleep ever! That being said, I would not recommend children or loud partiers to this inn. It is purely about relaxation and recuperation and everyone is mostly quiet and respectful. The beds are so comfortable, I'm still missing the amazing sleep I had while there. Our room had a king sized bed a tub/shower, and a outdoor private hot tub which still provided great views overlooking kona and the ocean. Our room was called the coffee cherry room. The breakfasts every morning were incredible! Started the day off with some delicious freshly ground and brewed Kona coffee grown on the plantation, followed by the freshest orange juice I've ever tasted and a yummy fresh fruit plate, all grown on the plantation or gathered from local farms. The breakfasts changed every day, but they were all incredible, healthy, and unique. For lunch & dinner the innkeepers can give you recommendations in Kona which is about a 15-20 minute from the inn. We rented a car, but we also Uber-ed one night and found it easy to get an Uber there and back. There are also some small snack shops and stores within walking distance of the inn. We were able and encouraged to explore the entire place. We were even allowed to take and eat fruits that we found. I love to do yoga and the inn supplied yoga matts as well as beach towels and beach supplies. There are so many positive things about this inn, I think I could write a whole book. I am so thankful we got to spend a portion of our honeymoon and the only con about this place is that we couldn't stay longer! We will definitely return in the future.

Mahalo nui loa for choosing Holualoa Inn for your Big Island honeymoon celebration and for posting this beautifully written rave review! Holualoa Inn was created for relaxation and romance and we are delighted you had the opportunity to indulge in both! The night sky here at 1,400 feet above sea level is indeed a marvel - we even have a telescope for guest use - and we do encourage our guests to explore our 30 acres filled with beautiful tropical fruits and flora and, of course, our 5,300 Kona coffee trees. We wish you all the best for a wonderful first year of marriage and hope to welcome you home to Holualoa Inn again in the future. Ho'okahikahi ke aloha, Kathryn and your Holualoa Inn Ohana

We went from the Four Seasons to the Holualoa Inn given both are 5 star locations. The Holuloa Inn was breath taking and my wife and I had a an amazing time. If you want to feel at home but feel exclusive at the same time this is the place to go. Only thing is that there is not air condition in the rooms, so this is the only sacrifice but the rest was amazing. The service of the staff, the breakfast, the ammenities and location is all wonderful.

Mahalo nui loa for choosing Holualoa Inn for your Big Island couples retreat, and for taking the time to write this lovely 5-star review. Our lush 30-acre private estate, filled with tropical gardens, coffee orchards, and walking paths amid estate-cut trees and sculptures, provides the ideal backdrop for exclusivity. And with only 8 accommodations, our guests are always able to find a private spot. We look forward to welcoming you home to Holualoa Inn again sometime in the future. Holualoa Inn was exactly what we were hoping it would be. The grounds are stunning and the ambiance of the Inn is perfect for a quaint getaway experience. Even as a bit of a hotel snob, I give this spot 5-stars. This is a B&B, so make sure you understand what you are getting into! A delicious breakfast is provided each morning, but otherwise you are largely left to fend for yourself (as we expected and we’re just fine with!). The rooms are very simple and there is no air conditioning (the evenings are very mild ~70F so it’s not super necessary, but on humid days you may notice). Our room had a queen bed which wasn’t the most comfortable, but overall the rooms were very clean (few gecko friends will visit surely) and the bathrooms modern. I don’t make any of the above comments negatively as we loved our time here and it was exactly as expected. The grounds are as breathtaking as the view. Just walking through the gardens makes your stress melt Away. The sunsets are one of a kind. There are also a number of thoughtful touches like complimentary beach chairs, snorkels, etc, whereas a number of 5-star resorts charge you 50$+ per day to rent… so we appreciated this very much! I would come back again no doubt. Perfect relaxing B&B.

While planning for a once in a lifetime honeymoon on the Big Island, we came across the Holualoa Inn, after researching the top luxury accommodations on the island with great reviews. We are very experienced travelers with vast hospitality knowledge in the family (having owned and operated a top boutique hotel in Los Angeles for close to 40 years). We wanted to have an intimate setting for this special trip and thought a high-end bed & breakfast would hit that mark for us. We are big fans of B&B’s in general, since they are usually super well kept, and you spend time with the hosts and learn more about the area than in an anonymous big hotel. We have stayed in B&B’s in almost all continents, and it has been always a great experience. Prior to arrival, we were contacted by the hosts asking about dietary restrictions and if this was a special occasion. We shared that I am mostly plant-based and my wife gluten-free. And, of course, that this is our honeymoon. Given the nightly rate of $750, we thought that this would be the perfect place for us. Upon arrival, we were greeted with a lack warmth and zero acknowledgement of our honeymoon. We thought that was strange but continued the tour of the property and our room. The main house is beautiful, well-appointed, and looks like the pictures on the website. In stark contrast, the cottage was dated, not well-appointed and did not reflect the price point of $750/ night. It looks more like a 3-star hotel. Specifically, the bathroom was gross, looked like a college dorm bathroom and could only fit one person at a time. The bathroom products looked and smelled like they were purchased at the $0.99 store, kept in a cheap plastic dispenser. There was no bodywash, but instead a cheap bar of soap. We didn’t think of it much, but in the room description on the website there were no pictures of the bathroom. Given the price, we didn’t think of it much. But now we know why. The living area looked specifically cheap and dated. There was no charm or any thought put into the setup for living room and kitchen area. If there wasn’t such a strict cancellation policy, we would have left immediately after one night, but we couldn’t afford to lose almost $3,000. At breakfast the next morning, it was the same picture (and the mornings after), there was no warmth of the staff whatsoever. It almost felt like the guests are a burden to the staff. There were no questions about how the first night was, what our plans for the day were, and if we needed anything. The breakfast options are limited, as stated on their website. What we didn’t expect was that, after asking about our dietary restrictions beforehand, the plant-based options were toast, jelly, and yoghurt (!!?). Luckily, I am not a strict vegan, but it was disappointing to see how unprepared the staff was. They knew I was eating plant-based and talked about it in the first morning but didn’t prepare anything. The last day, we decided to use the hot tub with the stunning view. My wife wanted to treat us with cold drinks which are kept in the main house. After the asking the staff about it, they only pointed in the direction of the fridge, didn’t offer help or tell us where the glasses are stored. Reluctantly, they gave us the glasses with the remark “don’t break them.” Again, every incident itself is tiny (not the accommodation), but for $750/ night, expectations for service and hospitality increase. What we got was a room worth max half the price, indifferent staff, and an absolute lack of warmth. We might have overlooked some of the shortcomings if we would have felt more welcomed. For $750/ night there are many beautiful hotels, even five-star accommodations if you plan well, and when we return next year, we will stay at one of those. We hope this review helps others to spare them from such a bad experience. Don’t be fooled by the positive reviews and the website imagery, because in actuality, this place is way over-priced for what it actually is.

Aloha Daniel & Erica, As seasoned bed and breakfast travelers, your comments are particularly important and informative to us. Having said that, we wish you had brought your disappointment to our attention during your stay with us, as that would have given us the opportunity to make some corrections. We could have moved you to another room and, at the very least, reviewed our cancellation policy. We never want our guests to be unhappy as that does not serve either one of us. The specific items you brought up definitely tells us some retraining of our staff is in order. This is an easy fix as most of our staff have been with us for years and know the importance of guest satisfaction and hospitality with aloha. While writing this response, I cannot defend what might have happened during your stay, but our management team will explore how and why you had this unfortunate experience. Your description of how the Cottage felt to you is something we will take a serious look into, as well as our description on the website. Our Cottage is a vintage structure, and there are some limitations with respect to design, but the last thing we want to do is over-promise and under-deliver. In your case, it appears we missed the mark. You came to us with a desire to have a “once in a lifetime experience,” and we are truly sorry that we failed you. Thank you for taking the time to write your thoughts. We sincerely take them to heart and will make necessary adjustments where possible. Wishing you a happy and healthy married life. Kathryn

I believe that there are six accommodation rooms. The place is really relaxing and quiet. Rooms are well equipped and comfortable, bed and linen and doona fantastically soft. The property is huge, gardens are beautiful and lush and maintained and walk through lined with some sculptures. All staff was really friendly, breakfasts were nicely presented and delicious. The best feature are the views, from everywhere (accommodation rooms, dining room, rooftop terrace, gardens, pool, spa). You can just not have enough of these completely open and unobstructed views down the mountain towards the flats, town and ocean behind.

Back to one of our favorite places to stay in Kona. Been here multiple times over the years and they never disappoint. Serene and relaxing surroundings, frogs lulling us to sleep. The addition of the sculpture garden a plus- visible from the rooms, overlooking the coffee fields and ocean. Breakfast is gourmet level, including a great fruit plate and wonderful coffee. Rooms are well equipped and comfortable. Staff are always friendly. Suggest having the couples massage (if traveling with your significant other), truly amazing and special in it being outside. Also had them prepare a dinner for us the last night and ate it in the pagoda overlooking the lighted downtown. Although we didn’t swim the pool is a delight with the tile flower on the bottom.

Holualoa Inn is absolutely dreamy. My husband and I stayed there for three nights in January 2023. We were in the Red Barn, which offered a generous amount of living space and the most perfect lanai for drinking morning coffee. The bed was exceptionally comfortable and the breakfast each morning was absolutely delicious. I would absolutely return back to this location. Every detail and accommodation is accounted for- from the pool side kitchenette to the telescope for night time star gazing. The inn is intimate and quiet, which is exactly what we needed at the end of our vacation after our adventures on thr Big Island.
