This small hotel in a historic building used to be a hospital for pilgrims en route to Santiago de Compostela. Next door is a convent, and a Cistercian monastry which was an important stopping place for the pilgrims. Nowadays it is a quiet and peaceful place for a stay to visit Astorga and Leon. The rooms are large and comfortable, with good bathrooms, and ours had a balcony overlooking the cloisters. Breakfast is served in what I think might have once been the kitchen, a large airy quarry tiled room, opening on to the garden. There is no out of hours food or drink service, but cold drinks are available in a fridge in the dining room, and there is a self service coffee machine. The staff we met were all very helpful and welcoming. Carrizo is a small place with a few shops, bars and pensions. Guests are invited next door to listen to the nuns singing Gregorian chants at 9pm, which I thoroughly recommend.
