The Peaks of Otter Lodge is in a simply breathtaking location with ample and varied hiking trails right from the lodge itself or within 1-2 miles. I, too, was alarmed by some of the reviews as I had not stayed there in about 25 years but we had a wonderful stay. No, it is not a brand new hotel but was very clean. The room was very comfortable and the showers felt sooo good. Where else could you take a picture of a deer 10 feet... more

I was a little afraid to stay here after reading the reviews. The room did have a few cobwebs in the ceiling and it was Spartan but it's a Lodge in the mountain not a 5 star resort. There was a TV in the bar and a TV room in the basement so one could watch if you couldn't refrain... more

My husband and I have gone there every year for our anniversary for the past 10+ years. We always asked for a certain range of rooms (not a specific room) in the middle building on the second floor. We choose the Lodge because of convenience - traveling on the BlueRidge Parkway - and were pleasantly surprised when we looked out our room's window to discover the beautiful view of the mountain & lake. My wife and I have been occasional guests at the Peaks for over a decade. It has been a favorite of ours for the opportunity to "get away from it all". Reading through previous reviews we find that we now concur with those who expressed negatives. Room rugs need to be replaced as well as some of the arm chairs.... more
