We drove across the wild Argyll peninsula for what seemed miles, located the entrance gate and turned into the drive. There were acres of roughly mown grass with wilderness areas beyond, all the more atmospheric in the drizzle, and eventually after a dramatic twist in the driveway the huge Balinakill hotel loomed before us. It was most imposing. In fact... more

I couldn't recommend this run-down hotel to anyone. The exterior is drab, the windows had no paint on them, the car park has water filled pot-holes - the interior is no better. I was in room 7, the whole tap rotated when you tried to turn it on. The interior of the windows equally had no paint on them -... more

Mr and Mrs G booked a superior room with bath on the second floor. When they arrived they decided there were too many stairs for Mrs G. I offered them a superior room on the first floor but that was not suitable as it had a bath and they prefered a shower... I explained the only room available on the...

The setting was lovely the Hotel was very old and had a lovely feel about it old furniture and maybe a little warn round the edges but this all added to the character of the place. The food was probably some of the best I have tasted and the service was superb friendly and efficient. Our room was a little... more

The approach to this hotel really says it all - a derelict tennis court, unkempt gardens with a mound of earth adjacent to the drive and looking into one of the main front windows of what could be a stunning house one sees what is presumably the admin office which is such a mess that one fears for the rest... more

We spent 4 days at this delightful hotel at the end of June - coinciding with a heatwave. Susan and Angus could not have been better hosts, but sadly they are leaving at the end of September, so get in while you can (though they are opening a smaller establishment on the other side of Kintyre). Rest of the staff... more

I booked the Balinakill Hotel at short notice and really didn't know what to expect. This hotel is not your usual corporate hotel chain type box. This place is a real hotel full of character with really nice people looking after you. The hosts Angus and Susan are fantastic and made us feel very much at home from the get... more

We only stayed one night en route from Islay ( it's very convenient for the ferry). We would have liked to stay longer, it's a privilege to stay in these beautiful old houses so unique to Britain. Lots of beautiful oak floors, staircases and panelling. Two comfortable guest lounges with lovely working fireplaces. Bedroom was comfortable with working shutters and... more

My wife and I were looking for a quiet location, somewhere to chill out for a couple of days. The Balinakill Country House Hotel was recommended by a friend and we are very glad it was. As we arrived and pulled into the car park our faces were a picture as, to be honest the Hotel looks tired and run... more

A great little hotel full of character. The hotel has it's eccentricities like squeaky floorboards, loose fitting doors and undulating floors, but hey, that's what an old country house settles down to. The food was excellent and served piping hot, beautifully presented. A good variety as well. The price was excellent but don't expect a doorman, porter service or 24... more

A genuinely great hotel with all the character you would expect from a country house hotel. The room we had was massive - as was the en suite - and the log fire was a fantastic feature to have. The furniture was all original and in-keeping with the feeling of the place. The staff were tremendously helpful and really can't... more
