Got off the ferry to be greeted by a faded facade, peeling sign and big pile of rubble in the car park so not the best first impression. Receptionist was not in the least bit friendly and did nothing to alter the initial impression - no welcome to Islay / Hotel / hope you enjoy your stay etc - if... more

In a word: rotten. Dirty rooms (used cigarette butts lying around), ancient decor, tv didn't work (and by the sounds of other reviews hasn't for quite some time), general smell of grease around the place, old junk piled up in the car park (with a view of this from the room), generally slow and disorganised service and the whole place... more

The website advertised a friendly hotel, being refurbished and would be finished by Easter 2009. Fortunately this has now been removed. Unfortunately I believed what it said. Our welcome was not what I would call warm. We stayed in the appartment over the shop. This is spacious but it needs refurbishing. It is tatty and, in places, grubby. The bathroom... more

Arrived off the 3.20pm ferry and waited 20 mins to get room key - to be fair only 1 girl working and she was doing everything. Rooms were OK, clean but when footie was on BBC2 boys were disappointed that TV's did not work, no ariel!! Whats the point of advertising TV in room when they do not work. Again... more

We stayed 1 night at this dreadful hotel. On arrival, we waited 15 minutes to be served at the reception. The reception, is in a dark dingy room with old chairs stacked up, and old office furniture lying around. This hotel is a throw back to the 1970's and badly needs money spending on it. We were shown to our... more

Stayed in the annex. Decor is a little dated but it was clean and comfortable. Price was an issue for us and we feel we received excellent value. We spent our last evening in the "Snug Bar" with the hosts sharing tales of life on the island and other guests chiming in with more details as well as humming the... more

The self-catering apartment was well stocked and had everything we could need. The views were outstanding from each of the front windows and there was constant hot water. Marian ws a very freindly and helpful lady who did all she could to make our stay comfortable. It was agood base from which to explore Islay and Jura - both beautiful... more

Arriving after a long drive from Glasgow by afternoon boat and after taken a short distillery visit we landed on Port Askaig Hotel. After a very nice welcome and familiar practical things we got everything as agreed - good seafood, whiskytasting, several nice bar-evenings, local band (guitar-banjo-accordion-digitalbagpipe) on Friday and finally also some tunes of an real bagpipe - amazing.... more

Right on the door step of the ferry, the hotel is not as clean and tidy as the adverts suggests on the ferry or web...the place seems tired and run down and in need of restoration to at least get rid of the damp in the rooms. The bar was functional but the complaints from locals re the draft beers... more

We were a rather big group who last week visited the lovely island in purpose to take part of the good whiskey. The stay we hadn´t expected much of because we were there for "the water of life" but what a NICE BIG SURPRISE our stay at this cozy hotel became ! This many hundreds of years old hotel became... more
