Had a lovely stay at the Malt Shovel, lovely surroundings, open log fire near the bar, real ale served & a selection of Butcombe beer. The food was really tasty and reasonably priced, the staff were very friendly and interesting to talk too. Will / Would stay again for sure. (reading some people comments we really need 2 appreciate value... More

Hannah and Mark strive hard to make this a wonderful place for a weekend - or weekday - get away or special occasion meal. As a nearby local resident, we save the Malt Shovel onto our "Special" list, and have never been unhappy. High quality local ingredients, and a wonderful atmosphere. Thoroughly recommended.

Stayed here as a joint 50th birthday celebration for me and a friend. There were 9 adults and 2 children alltogether, stayed for two nights. Rooms were fairly basic, thin mattress on bed, no toiletries in bathroom, security lights in car park were on all night with light coming through bedroom window. Given it was a 50th birthday and we... More

Had a meal there this evening and it fell a long way short from the service that we had received in previous visits. Food was served quickly but the carvery consisted of preplated meat which wasn't very warm. It was nice to see the good range of vegetables that was available though. Service wasn't particularly impressive considering that the place... More

We stayed in April, nice pub so we ordered a drink on arrival, we informed barmaid we were staying and completed arrival details, finished our drink and had to ask where our room was, she continued to watch TV and pointed down the pub telling us to go through the double doors and the rooms are there. Although we were... More

Stayed here for the first time in January 2011, though we are familiar with the pub as we have stayed next door and eaten here in the evenings quite a few times. We managed to get a very good lastminute deal of £50 a night B&B. Check in was no problem and found the whole place very laid back. The... More

Our first mistake was to book up when the managers were away for their break. Looking after the Inn was her Mother who spent far to long talking and not giving us the service we should have had. The service in the restaurant was probably the worst that we have ever seen. We ordered a garlic mushroom and a cooked... More
