The Walpole Bay Hotel (with intriguing 'and Museum' suffix) is probably not for everyone. A little note given to guests at reception warns not to run the kettle and radiator at the same time for fear of shorting out the circuit. After a walk from Broadstairs to Margate in sub zero temperatures, this is of course the first thing we... More

I stayed at the Walpole whilst away on busiess on my own, and highly recommend this hotel. It makes a refreshing change from sterile hotel chains. The hotel is full of character, the staff attentive and friendly. I ordered room service, and whilst its a limited menu, the food I ordered was hot, well cooked and well presented. Its the... More

This is a special place and is badly served by its 2 star rating. Fascinating, comfortable, pleasantly eccentric, we have stayed 4 times now. We found it after a bad experience at the budget chain hotel by the station. Its much nicer, great fun, slightly cheaper and you get a good breafast included. This Edwardian hotel is slightly shabby in... More

This hotel has a fantastic 1920s retro look throughout. The staff and owner were super friendly and the room was clean and tidy. I loved the original gated lift and the bar is very homely, they even have a museum on the 2nd floor as well as some fantastic napkin art. More

Can't recommend this hotel enough,a hotel with personality that isn't afraid to strut its stuff. We were made to feel very welcome .We spent 2 nights at the Walpole and felt completely at home, the owner took time to point out interesting features and did'nt do it robotically from a" text book",she was obviously passionate about the hotel and its contents. We will... Do not stay here if you cannot appreciate a standard of service that we have nearly lost over the years. How this great family & marvelous staff manage to maintain a hotel with such attention to one's personal comfort is beyond me. Ok, no central heating in a great bedroom & en suite [heating in public areas] but two electric... More

A hotel where service is the key. I have stayed at the Walpole bay while working in Margate over a period of several years. The staff and service have always been great but this year the upgrade to the rooms have made it a brilliant stay. If you are after a sterile group hotel do not stay there. If you... More

We spent two nights at the Walpole. We thought it was a fascinating hotel; quirky and so different from chain places. Family owned, it's in a great position and very quiet. There weren't many people there - mid November- so breakfast was cooked to order and we were given plenty of individual attention. Our room was at the front of... More

Very odd place with mannequins lurking in the corridors and bric a brac on every available surface. My room was cold with no central heating. Reception warned that the surrounding area was unsafe for women from 5pm. If you're coming for a murder mystery you'll have a fab time, but if you want mod cons, stay elsewhere. More

From the moment you pull up outside the Walpole Bay Hotel you know you're going to find something a little different. Whereas a lot of the surrounding properties have had more modern extensions and additions, the Walpole Bay Hotel is still very much as it would have been in its earlier years. That's not to say it hasn't been extended... More
