Loved this place. It has quaint and comfortable wooden cottages surrounded by lush green trees and orchids. The food is excellent and reminds of home. There are mini lawns with swings where one can enjoy the warm sunshine. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. The dogs are adorable. It's away from the hustle and bustle of city life and helps in rejuvenating ones soul. Highly Recommend.

A beautiful homestay situated in the lap of nature. Holumba is a quaint property located a couple of kilometres away from the main town. Home to various variety of flowers and butterflies, we enjoyed every moment we stayed there. We were welcomed by Mrs Thinlay, she is extremely polite and friendly. She guided us on planning our tour the next day and suggested some really good eateries around Kalimpong. It is a lovely place for people who love fur babies, the 3 dogs and 3 pups were like cherry on the cake. Our 2 nights at Holumba were peaceful and perfect.

Response from Thinlay , General Manager at Holumba Haven
Responded 11 Jun 2022
Thank you for taking the time to write your review of our homestay accommodation. We do sincerely hope that our response explains and clarifies the issues faced and raised by you. 1. Apparently your expectations relayed by your travel agent was not met - probably due to the misconception that you had booked into a typical “Hotel” . What Holumba Haven does provide is a ‘garden home hospitality’ where in our family have opened our gates to ‘Homestay’ type accommodation and service . We have clearly mentioned this fact on our website. Holumba is a family managed venture, where all family members live within the premises and are available to address any issues faced by guests. 2. Our dogs have grown up as puppies roaming free within the area (approx 1 hectare ) . They are well trained, friendly and are used to being with guests. In fact, if I am not mistaken I did briefly interact with two young smart boys (probably your sons) who were very keenly looking for our dogs, wanting to play with them - probably having interacted with them earlier! I am sorry to learn that you have dog phobia – what can I say, it so unfortunate. Had you informed any one of the family members or staff of your phobia - we would have surely kept our dogs away from the common areas. 3. Holumba has an all-embracing natural forested garden of nearly 1000 varieties of plants – of Himalayan orchids, bamboos , azaleas , camellias, magnolias including many endemic and exotic trees and a host of other bulbs , tubers , rhizomatic plants like begonias etc., and one would naturally also expect insects , bees etc as part of organic eco system. Holumba habitats over two dozen varieties of residential bird families, including many squirrels which feed on the seasonal fruits, berries and shrubs etc. *Note: Mosquito repellent are provided in ALL our rooms. 4. In All rooms we have clearly mentioned that ‘housekeeping is on request’ – as most in-house guest value their privacy and normally do not want daily housekeeping except for taking out the trash ! We are sorry if you didn’t view or read the printed poster hung inside the room detailing this fact, which included the meal timings among other details. However, had you requested for housekeeping, we would have surely serviced the room to your satisfaction. We do hope our sincere and transparent response will help settle your mind. . Responded by: Mrs. Thinlay Pempahishey. Management .

I have all praise for Holumba Haven. We had a wonderful time here. Beautiful wooden cottages (first cottage was built in 1935),most importantly those are very well maintained, and retaining the charms of old world. Lots of trees , beautiful flowers, orchids, birds chirping made our stay more enjoyable in the lap of nature. I must mention the Sumptuous food we had and the wonderful hospitality. Thank you Mrs. Thinlay and all the people of Holumba Heaven.

Mr.Karma Pempahishey believes so and we understood his philosophy. It is difficult to find a second Holumba, at least I haven't come across in my 64 years. Money doesn't matter with Mr.Karma ( he is over 80 years now)in this garden of Eden with over 500 species of plants, over 10 nos.cats, about 7dogs (all very friendly) and fish in the water tank. Cleanliness is what matters, not the frills. It is not a typical Hotel but cottages made of wood, beautifully decorated with Tibetian handicrafts. Life is about warmth and love, whether it is the knowlege of Mr.Karma on varied subjects viz. Orchids, Tibetology, Buddhism, Indian Constitution, on which you can be all ears for hours. Or the home cooked food prepared by Mrs.Thinley(daughter-in-law of Mr.Karma) with love and care or the industriousl Ms.Kelsang (daughter of Mr.Karma) , putting in hours to maintain the 2 acre plus property. We, 3 families, had gone during the Durga Puja, the main festival of Bengal, to escape the din and bustle particularly in a pandemic environment and being aware that we were going to be hosted by a family whose institution was closed for since April because of the Covid19 pandemic and was just reopening with skeleton staff. We really felt rejuvenated in the 4 days we stayed there. If you love nature and want to be one with it and can avoid the frivolities of modern life, then this the stay you would enjoy to look inward and be one with yourself.

I booked one single and one double occupancy in Magnolia Cottage. All the beds were standard singles and they were hard. The heritage cottage was charming and quaint with interesting decor. Each room had a separate bathroom and together we had use of a little sitting room. However there was no heating of any kind and February is still winter. There was no hot water to the basin and the water to the shower was warm rather than hot. Actually it was not really viable to shower as the pressure was insufficient and there was no rest to attach the nozzle at shoulder height so it was really a hand held. I figured that if I was doing Indian bathing I was entitled to a decent Indian breakfast but what we got was the usual porridge, toast and eggs. I was somewhat disappointed therefore when I discovered that the breakfast actually cost us Rs250 each. We had opted not to have dinner at Rs400 per person the previous night. One very good thing about the property was that there was a good footpath with no real inclines all the way into town which was only about one kilometre away. In summary the Holumba had heritage charm in spades and the garden was lovely but that really did not compensate for a cold room, a hard bed, an inadequate shower and a crumby breakfast.
