We stayed at this KOA in July 2022. I'll breakdown the good, the bad and the ugly for you. This was our first time trailer camping here, but we've stayed at other KOA's. Two families traveling with teenagers, not small kids. Our travel trailer is 30 ft w/ one slide out. Overvall we really enjoyed our stay at Santa Margarita KOA and while it was toasty more inland than I had expected the campgrounds were clean, laid out well and super quite. The Good: Easy to drive to and easy to get into our spot (#28). Partial shade, full hook-ups, but they were placed further back so some connections where a stretch. Site was fairly level. We were there Sunday thru Thur and pretty much had the surrounding area to ourselves. Restrooms and Bath House were clean. Tons of wildlife driving into camp and star gazing at night was spectacular. Easy access to SM Lake and still an easy drive into Pismo, Morro Bay and SLO. Tons of kids activities - vollyball, pool, jumping pillow, bike riding. Adult activities - also the jumping pillow, horseshoes, corn-hole, pool and walks around the park. Tons of trees. Upper views from terraces at sunset are beautiful. Campfires were allowed when we stayed there, but be vigilant of sparks and fly-away embers. The Bad: Becuase of when we stayed it was rather dusty at the sites, especially when the wind picked up. There were also meat bees and annoying flys that buzzed you while trying to enjoy the outdoors. I did notice some mosquitoes at dusk. Even in cooler months, I'm sure the meat bees would be there. I'd bring a catcher and put it up away from your site to attrach the flys and bees. Also, since we were there in July, the foothills leading up the KOA were as dry as can be. Other times of the year, I bet the drive is more pleasant. The Ugly - There are some steep hills to drive on to get to your spot, depending on rig size and where you are assigned in the campgrounds, you may experience skidding. We pull our 30 ft Keystone with a F-150 and never had a power issue, but there were a few times when we were backing in that our tires slid or couldn't quite grip the gravelly roads. Just something to be aware of. And being this far out, cell signal was spotty and pretty much non-existant so if you need it for work, stay elsewhere. We were disappointed in Santa Margarita Lake not because we couldn't swim, I already knew about that, but there are signs posted everywhere warning about algae bloom on the lake. Nothing was posted online that I saw. We had hoped to kayak a few mornings, but after seeing the warnings, we opted to skip that. The town of Santa Margarita is quaint with several restaurants and shops. We ate at J's Country Kitchen for breakfast and it was great. Big portions and the outdoor seeting was nice. The whole area is very pet friendly. We spent time in SLO, Pismo and Morro Bay this trip ... all about a 30 min drive from the KOA ... if it had been cooler, we would have been happy to hang around the campsite.…
