Although I stayed in the Dejuyuan guest house for only two nights, I enjoyed them immensely. The rooms are comfortable and the staff very friendly and helpful. But best of all, in a touristy town with a lot of mediocre food, their dinner options are excellent and very moderately priced.

A small courtyard hotel in traditional style on one of the main streets in Pingyao. Facilities may be limited but the character more than makes up for that. Staff friendly and helpful with reasonable English. Food good. Recommended if you want to experience China rather than stop in a tourist bubble.
