My wife and I stayed at Ryokan Fujioto in May. Beautiful property; great hosts and staff; food was interesting, well presented, and delicious. Highly recommend this ryokan. Walked the trail from Magome to Tsumago. Well worth the effort.

We have been living in Japan for 4 years and have stayed at a number of ryokan. Fujioto Ryokan is a very nice traditional building in a beautiful village/area of Nagano countryside. if you are looking for a real Japanese experience off the beaten tracks, the place (ryokan and village) is worth the trip. The ryokan is run the traditional... More

Not only located in one of Japan's most beautiful regions, the ryokan itself is a great experience of what a real traditional ryokan should be. The owner speaks English and is very friendly and helpful, just like the rest of the staff. They serve an extended and delicious regional and seasonal kaiseki menu in the evening (mountain vegetables at their... More

Loved our stay here. Very spacious rooms, great gardens, friendly English speaking staff. Come here if you want to see the most amazing cherry blossoms (white, red, pink and multi coloured petals on the same trees- not grafted!). Flowering time is now (23rd April) - dates change slightly year to year. There is an easy walk to do from Magome (8km away)... More

We traveled three hours by rail to spend another 3 hours to hike the beautiful Nakasendo Trail. We ended up in magical but small Tsumago (as previously reviewed). It just better and better when we ended up in Fujioto Ryokan. Mr. Fujihara and his staff were so gracious and welcoming. They helped guide us to the full Tsumago cultural experience.... More

We booked 1 night in Fujioto based on the reviews on tripadvisor and we were not disapointed. A very warm welcome when we arrived: we were too early for check in but could leave our luggage and got immediate suggestions about what to do in Tsumago. Our room was big with a separate sitting space and a balcony (it was... More

There isn't too much to say about this wonderful experience. First of all, the village is magic, it makes you think you play in an old Japanese movie. It is great but with a maximum stay of 2 nights, as the location is very small. The village has a nice small museum and many souvenir shops. As for the ryokan,... More

We stayed one night in Feb 2013 and it was one of the highlights in our two week Japanese experience. We were the first guests for the new year and received exceptional service. The hosts were friendly and helpful and have a genuine family connection to the 125 year old ryokan. The food was stunningly beautiful both in appearance and... More

We stayed here for 1 night in Oct 2012 and it was one of many highlights on out trip. The garden is lovely and we were lucky enough to get their best and largest room. The staff were very welcoming and flexible enough to offer us a slightly early breakfast as we had to catch an early bus when we... More
