Perhaps it is when were there, July 15 and 16, 2009 but the town of Olite was dead, hardly anyone walking around, felt very non-Spanish. If you want to visit a small town in Spain, this is a perfect one (such a different expereince than just hitting the big cities like Barcelona and Madrid) and staying at a true 15th century castle was the perfect way to soak it all in. We really enjoyed our stay at this Parador. However there seemed to be roadworks around the town and half of the signs to the Parador were apparently covered up... would have been nice to know this before trying to get there. The concept of the Parador hotels is amazing...but we found that the reality was sorely lacking. Perhaps this was because our room was not in the wing of the "castle proper" itself, but what seemed to be an added-on brick structure built with narrower doors etc. to resemble a castle.
