I've stayed at Viang Yonok twice now. The first time I was there for 2 weeks putting the finishing touches to a live video project and again recently as a base for a tour into Laos. Ian and Vassana are wonderful hosts, nothing is too much trouble and there is always time for a chat about yesterday's day out or... More

If you want a small comfortable place without the trappings of a resort hotel, then this place is perfect. We stayed in February 2011 (I know, so long ago) and I have to apologise to Vassana, her Mum, Ian and Dang for not posting this 13 months ago! I have been spurred into action due to reading the latest reviews... More

My adult daughter and I spent 4 nights here in early February and it was the perfect choice for that time in our trip, a chance to rewind and refuel, an opportunity to enjoy the natural world in that part of Thailand. We felt well looked after by Vassana and Dang (Ian was away) in terms of warm hospitality, tasty... More

In a village about 4 km from Chiang Saen, a historically interesting and lovely country town in itself, you will find Viang Yonok which overlooks Chiang Saen lake. The beautiful peaceful setting, which abounds in bird life, combined with the wonderfully kept surrounding gardens of Viang Yonok and the view out of the bedroom window, particularly at morning, and sunset... This is my second attempt to extoll the pluses of this wonderful hotel in Northern Thailand. My first try ran into a problem with a phrase of mine. . .actually a quotation from Mark Twain. . .which I chose to use to support my argument that Viang Yonok, while being 6th in value and 11th in service out of the... Hands down, the best food I had in northern Thailand. The chef is 72, the mother of Vassana, one of the owners, and her Thai food is brilliant. We were welcomed with a Thai yom, salad with toasted cashews. Can I please have the recipe? Although we were only at Viang Yonok for 24 hours, every meal, activity, sensation was... More

Viang Yonok absolutely deserves its No. 1 ranking & award. Ian & Vassana said they're not doing it for the money, and it shows, not just in the terrific value for this quality of accommodation, but their care for their guests, their staff and their pristine environment. Stayed 4 nights early Feb and were lucky to be the only guests... More

If you are looking for five star luxury, then pay megabucks and go elsewhere.  But if you want somewhere with personal with a P and service with an S, and outstanding value for money, then this little hotel is it.  This place is nothing fancy, just seven little cottages with a small pool, a little gym and an open air... Hi TouringPandAS, simpkinHelston and BeachSwaggie, Thank you so much for your reviews and we're happy you were happy. This is a beautiful, fascinating part of the country and it's great you were able to experience some it. Yes, shopping is not my thing, that's my better half's department. If you have a chance to re-visit, we'll show you some different... More

We stayed here for 5 nights before Christmas, and absolutely loved it. Beautiful location next to the lake (with glorious sunsets), very comfortable rooms and good facilities. In all a very pleasant, laid back place to be, so relaxing and comfortable. All the people there were so welcoming and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. Ian and Vassana, the owners,... More

Overall, this is a good resort, but we were not fans. The rooms are clean, the location is good, but the owners and chef hover around the guests. Also, rooms are not very sound proof- you can hear complete conversations other people have outside while you are in your room (which probably means they can hear you, too). The amenities... More

Hi roundtheworld30, Thank you for your interesting review. Rather than respond to each of your comments, I think I will just say that we are a friendly, family run, small hotel, rather than an exclusive private resort. The fact that over 90% of our guests have given us a 5 star review and that we are rated the No.1 hotel... More
