Staff was extremely helpful in arranging a guided tour in English at the excellent El Anglo museum. (And I just asked the to please check if there were any guided tours in English.) The hotel is wonderfully located for enjoying the waterfront, the sunsets.
Strongly recommended: visiting the former Anglo meat-packing plant (now a museum) and taking the panoramic road to Las Cañas.
The town is not a place for sophisticated living but for relaxation. You will feel welcome at all times.
Also, while visiting Fray Bentos we never felt the slightest concern...

After a cockroach experience in my last hotel, chose the Gran Hotel for a bit of comfort. Standard travelling salesman hotel: clean, decent room and bathroom, helpful staff, rubbish breakfast.

The hotel is in a pleasant location next to a nice park built on the steep banks of the Rio Uruguay. It is a 5 minute walk to the central plaza. Fray Bentos has very limited accomodation - only a couple of seedy or old and run-down hotels near the Plaza that I know of.
