Travelling by motorcycles en route for a tour of Southern Ireland, we encountered heavy rainfall for two hours before heading into Newton Stewart, close enough to Stranraer and the ferry in the morning. Hotel was warm and inviting from the second I walked in to the reception area. Room was light and clean, large with plenty of space. Bathroom was large and clean with good working and powered shower. We arrived only to find that the double four poster we had booked was now a twin! The helpful but confused receptionist was quickly replaced by the excellent Hotel Manager, Callum. Service at the Bruce Hotel was excellent; friendly and attentive, but without being obtrusive. Food was also very good indeed. The location is perfect for a variety of activities, particularly outdoor pursuits such as walking, cycling, fishing and golf (as listed on the website). We will certainly return to this area, and will happily make the Bruce our base again. more

Extremely welcoming and bike-friendly. Fab location for 7 Stanes and Sustrans Route 7 (Glasgow-Carlise) runs within 300m of the front door. Mike and the staff of the Bruce are working hard to build up this place's reputation for great service. Sue and Mike are extremely welcoming and helpful and their staff as well. The hotel is being updated but, unfortunately, our rooms h were the last to be tackled. The food, apart from breakfast, is disappointing but, apparently, a new chef has arrived. Newton Stewart is not an attractive town but it stands in wonderful countryside. more
