This is probably the nicest place to stay in this charming riverine town, 5 hours north of Buenos Aires. The two smarter hotels may have more comforts but they lack character. The Puerto has bags of it. It is right by the river and just a couple of blocks from the main square. Painted on the outside rose red and green, it has a large lobby, where a simple brekfast is served, and decorated with old photos of the town and family portraits. I had a real single room, with a narrow but comfortable bed. There was a gas heater (needed in Sep!) and a ceiling fan for the hotter months. The room gave onto a pretty courtyard. Larger rooms upstairs look out onto the street and may be a bit noisy as the town´s young men like speeding around noisily on the motor cycles. Staff were friendly and helpful, helping with onward reservations and taxis to the bus station.
Colon is certainly worth a night or two. The riverside is pretty, with views across to Uruguay, there are beaches for the hot summer...
