what beautiful surroundings and what beautiful rooms everyone seemed so helpful but we discovered too helpful especially to the few english bank notes we had in a zipped compartment in our suitcase this is great place to stay but lock your suitcases as they will be searched by staff what a shame more

Beautiful facilities coupled with an excellent, friendly service. Nothing was too much trouble & the staff ensured that our stay was such a memorable occasion. De Opstal is situated in an idyllic area and affords luxury at affordable prices. The whole staff is focused upon guest comfort & satisfaction & we spent 2 perfect days in such delightful surroundings. more

A mixed bag of reviews but we can but speak as we found and we found it excellent. Allotted room 21 (the honeymoon suite) which I think cost about £5 more than an ordinary room. Large modern with 'antiques'. Everything you need, large bathroom well equipped separate shower and loo and a very comfortable bed. Lovely grounds for walking/bird watching.... more

We recently stayed here for 2 night. We both really loved it. The staff couldn't do enough for you. Our room was very large with a fantastic bathroom (particularly loved the shower hat). On our 2nd day we visited the Cango Caves early and then embarked on the Swartberg Pass - a MUST if could can cope with heights- scenery... more

Firstly I would start by saying if you want to stay somewhere modern and hi tech this is not the place. We LOVED this property and could not find fault with it at all. The best way I can describe this place is like going back in time, from the homely furniture to the open fires both inside and outside... more

We arrived just before nightfall and it was enchanting with each cottage room having a roaring fire burning outside. The cottage has a huge bedroom with large fireplace and loads of wood to have a fire buring that evening after we had dined. Beautiful large bathroom. The whole hotel is furnished in a country style which was appropriate for this... more

Two totally different experiences here. We arrived at 1830 having driven from Stellenbosch - we were greeted with "You are the late comers" - we were shown the room and told "you can dine at 715pm - can you choose what you want now" - at this point we hadn't even got the cases from the car! We duly dined... more

Our stay was for one night only but we loved the change from other hotels. Our accommodation was interesting with unusual furnishing and decor, 2 bathrooms and everything we needed. The gardens were peaceful and it was fun to see the ostriches. It was sunny and warm during the day but we weren't expecting to swim in the outdoor pool;... more

De opstal is probably one of the weirdest places we have ever stayed. As soon as we arrived the children wanted to leave!! We'd barely got out of the car before we had to decide what we were having for dinner. The menu was limited with ostrich being the main option, and the one meal we ate here was definitely... more

This felt like stepping back in time. We drove though the imposing entrance gate and received a quick practical welcome. We had to choose our evening menu options straight away. The accommodation is set in converted old farm buildings, rural memorabilia everywhere, stable doors to some properties. Fires everywhere, in the rooms, candles, oil lamps, outside! The log fireplace in... more
