It is the second time I have stayed at Gibela. Elmer was warm, friendly and accommodating. It is well situated from FLorida Road with all the restaurants as well as not too far from the beach front (although not walking distance) but transport very easy to organise. Gibela is not the conventional backpackers - very clever move - party up... More

Owner was unpleasant to be around, and seemed to have difficulty not being rude, so much so we went to stay somewhere else. If you are sensitive to being around OCD types, avoid this place as its a major bummer. The maids who work for him, however, do a stellar job. One can guess why. Breakfasts were nice and the... More

Enjoyed my stay at Gibela. Owner very informative. The breakfast was very good. I had a car and the secure parking was a bonus. Would stay there again

I've stayed here a couple times; proves a good location as just off the main road, yet walking distance to Florida Road (party central) and also Market (an upmarket restaurant). Limited but usually adequate parking space and a simple breakfast is available. The dorm rooms, bathrooms and kitchen are all well attended to and very clean. Good value for money.

A friend recommended Gibela Backpackers to me for the night I was passing through Durban and what a good recommendation it was. You should be clear before booking that this is not a hotel but a hostel with a really great atmosphere. Situated in what appeared to be a quiet and fairly laid back part of the city it is... More

Hopefully on your next trip to Durban you will spend more than just one night. Durban has way to much to explore and discover for a 1 day stay. Good to hear you enjoyed your stay and found that Gibela lived up to your standards. More

We stayed for 2 nights at Gibela Backpackers in a double room. The room was clean and comfortable. Common kitchen, bathroom etc. were very clean and breakfast was excellent. We were also very impressed with the friendly and helpful staff. The location is very good, only a few minutes walk from Florida Road in a safe part of durban where... More

This was my first stay at a Backpackers and I would recommend this place to everyone. The hostel is clean and the owner Elmer is very patient, very helpful and very knowledgeable about Durban. The breakfasts are good, the place very secure and a good nights sleep assured. I have to say when I stayed the place was a chilled... More

Good to hear that you found the Gibela touch refreshing. Yes you right with not being a party hostel - we definately try to give guest a quiet peaceful stay where they can have a good nights sleep after a night out. More

We've just had six nights at Gibela and I don't think we could have found a better base for our stay in Durban. Elmar, the owner, is helpful, and eager to share his knowledge of the city. We really appreciated the wealth of accurate, clear, factual info available about what to see and do locally. We opted for one of... More

We stayed in two double rooms and found the place very clean, tastefully furnished/decorated and inviting. The receptionist was friendly and professional. As a downside though, when reception closes in the evening there seems to be no access to either the bar, the internet or TV so it might not be the place of choice for the fun-seeking. The kitchen... I stayed at Gibela over a long weekend in a 6-bed dorm and can thoroughly recommend it. The house is set in the most lovely garden and there is plenty of comfortable communal space to enjoy. Amenities include 2 dinner tables and lounging areas (inside and out), a well-equipped (and clean!) kitchen, plenty of showers and lots of hot water,... More
