Travellers' Choice
Somatheeram Ayurvedic Health Resort is situated on the picturesque Malabar Coast, providing a stunning view over the infinite sandy beach. The guests live far away from mass tourism in the middle of a large tropical garden in one of 70 south Indian cottages and houses. Being the first resort to have made Ayurvedic teachings well-known beyond India’s borders, Somatheeram’s aspiration was to provide Ayurveda, yoga and meditation in a peaceful and captivating setting, supported by an Ayurvedic nutrition. For 30 years now, Somatheeram is THE Ayurvedic centre that adopts this holistic approach and at the same time reflects India’s culture and beauty. Somatheeram is the undisputed No. 1 in its field. So far, it has been awarded ten times as “The Best Ayurvedic Centre” and has received the “National Tourism Award” three times already and spearheads all its competitors.

Somatheeram Health Resort is like paradise. I’ve been coming here every year from 10 year. I’ve really appreciated the ambience, the treatments are always excellent. The staff is very kind and I always felt relaxed. The food is delicious and the dining hall is fantastic and with a beautiful view of the sea. I hope that it will be the same in future.

Somatheeram Ayervedic Health resort is a wonderful place to heal and restore from the demanding lifestyles we can lead. Extremely professional team of experts Ayervedic medical team, all the staff care so much and attend to any queries with a gentle and positive attitude. The treatments are deeply healing and administered in a safe and professional environment. The food is delicious and the gardens are very well cared for. I was able to take up yoga again from their daily practise and continue to maintain this. I look forward to returning. Three weeks totally re set and restored me back to where I was hoping to be again.

It was an overall excellent experience: great fresh and healthy food, wonderful treatments (Reji and Andrews were top) and yoga sessions, very clean inside and outside my cottage, beautiful gardening. Staff very friendly and helpful. The medical staff (Dr. Shareena and Dr. Vasakh) was also very professional and caring. Only one aspect that I would improve since I was going to the beach everyday: the lounges are not very comfortable.

Great food and service. Staff is very caring and the treatments are excellent. The resort location is beautiful and the gardens are very well maintained. Our stay was comfortable and it felt like home after a few days. The doctors are caring and spend a lot of time listening to your issues and tailoring the treatments accordingly.

Somatheeram is ideal for those seeking a good blend of resort-style relaxation and effective Ayurvedic treatments. The staff are lovely and very helpful. The food has a lot of variety in both Kerala cuisine and food from other regions. Check out the traditional tea stall on-site.

This is an excellent place to experience everything Ayurveda has to offer! The doctors and therapists are attentive and accommodating and their herbs work wonderfully! I especially enjoyed a tour of the production facility where they make all the medicinal oils and powders. Learning more about their labor intensive process, quality ingredients and high standards helped me appreciate every treatment even more. Thanks to Dr. Jobin and staff for organizing this highly educational experience.

Firstly the positive: the treatments were absolutely lovely and the food was delicious. However, I went because I have some health issues that I was looking forward to addressing with an Ayurvedic approach. This barely happened. For example, I have two autoimmune issues that I hoped to explore in some depth and from a different perspective, but was simply told that the best thing was to support my immune system with chiwanprash - which I've used for years and is a lovely supplement that I buy in England, but that was it, no other advice. You see doctors every day, but in my opinion it's a very superficial generalised check-up, not really personalised. The accommodation was ok. My bungalow was clearly quite old with 70's-type decor, and there was never enough hot water for me to wash my hair, despite my asking four times for it to be fixed. The biggest problem with the accommodation for me was the steep climb to and from it. There were 80-90 steep, and in places uneven, concrete steps that I had to climb several times a day. This wasn't mentioned when I booked, despite the fact that I'm 75. I started to develop pain in my Achilles tendon towards the end of my stay, which I've never previously had, and was limping. Soon after my return it fully ruptured, definitely due to the repetitive and accumulative injury on those steps. Another health issue I had there was that for the second half of my three-week stay I had the worst diahorroeia I've ever had, despite not having eaten or drunk anything at all off-site. This resulted in the Ayurvedic doctor calling in medics from the local western hospital to rehydrate me and prescribe antibiotics - which at the end of my stay I was surprised to find I'd been charged for. Although the beach looked lovely from above it was actually quite dirty in places. The sea was too rough to swim in most days, but in any case I learned that it was common knowledge that the large number of local fishermen regularly use it as their toilet and that it was polluted with faeces! I'm not usually a complainer, but my stay at Somatheeram really wasn't what I'd hoped. For me it was a great deal of money to spend on myself, and I did so because I expected to feel rejuvenated when I returned home. Instead of which I was weakened by diahorroeia, on antibiotics and sustained quite a serious leg injury which will take several months to heal. I have lovely memories of the therapists and treatments, and of the food. But apart from that I simply can't recommend Somatheeram.
