Alderhouse B&B describes itself as "A gracious Bed & Breakfast" and it most certainly is. The rooms are spacious, clean and come with quilts made by Alyce the owner and cable TV (along with an impressive DVD collection). The common room, where breakfast is taken, is large, airy and a pleasant place to read a book or simply watch the cruise ships passing by (there is also a spacious outside deck from which to do this). Soft drinks, coffee and snacks are available throughout the day, but the highlight is undoubtedly Alyce's hearty, beautifully cooked breakfast. Alyce is also knowledgeable and friendly and will take time to advise you on what to do and see in and around Ketchikan. You can also store gear in her garage and borrow bear spray if you venture into the wilderness.
The drawbacks include the distance from downtown (you can walk, and there is public transport but a car would be advisable) and the price (just under US$ 150 in fall 2008).
