I had visited Don Carlos on earlier trips to shop their gift shop, but finally stayed there this time. Everything about this Hotel is great. The beauty of the hotel with the artwork, fountains, and decor is the best. Location is right near downtown, but in the beautiful Barrio Amon area. more

I liked the hotel and having lived in the city for so long. The neighborhood was not that big a distraction. I would take children to this hotel. Two things that ruined the stay where the breakfast (awful) and getting bit by bed bugs. more

We selected Hotel DOn Carlos based on previous reviews from this site, on the artwork they are said to have and for its price/quality. The hotel's common area boast with paintings and other artifacts and the staff is very friendly and helpfull (they even kept some clothes we forgot until our return). However, after two weeks in Costa Rica's tropical... more

This hotel has regular rooms and superior rooms for about $10 more. We visited during green season so the front desk staff had the time to give us a tour and show us a few rooms. The standard rooms were nice, clean and comfortable looking. The two superior rooms we saw were both unique and fun. We ended up taking... more

Travelers: 60, 40 & 11 year old females first time in Central America We stayed our first two night in Costa Rica and enjoyed it quite a bit. Because we had heard that San Jose can be unsafe at night we did not go out at night but otherwise felt fine walking around during the day. The stay was friendly... more

I (24) was traveling Costa Rica with my family, Mother and Father who are both in their fifties and two younger brothers (ages 17 and 20). We asked to stay in their two bedroom suite which was $95 a night. They must have a magic digital camera because it didn't look like the room we viewed on their website. We... more

The hotel was lovely. The rooms were basic but very clean. Service was excellent. Breakfast was great as was dinner in the restaurant. The only downside was the noise from the street...ask for an interior room. more

Look, I wasn't a huge fan of San Jose. I'm glad I experienced it once but I don't have much desire to go back. That said, I'd consider going back just so I could stay at Hotel Don Carlos again. Located in a quiet, less touristy neighborhood, this hotel has got to be the best place to stay in all... more

The rooms are nice - more boutique style than McRooms at the Holiday Inn and such... and the staff is extremely helpful and friendly (like most Costa Ricans). The neighborhood the Don Carlos is in is one of the nicer neighborhoods with lots of old-school colonial architecture. It's also right next to Las Palmas Grill, an EXCELLENT Peruvian restaurant. The... more
