This was our second trip to Kolkata and we knew this hotel and its big reputation. We didn’t stay there the first time, but we did this time, and I’m glad of it. While I wouldn't describe it as luxurious accommodation, it was characterful, well run and friendly. First, the driver we requested was at the airport to collect us... More

Fairlawn a well managed and serviced small property near to Indian museum in Sudder street just few meters away from crowded main road. January 1st week I stayed there. My room no-7 is in first floor. Common spaces in first floor decorated carefully, showing the past glory. Bath room was neat and clean. Except me all guests were from Europe.... More

I agree with the majority of the positive reviews. This hotel has to been seen to appreciate it. It is like walking back into colonial days. Certainly there are signs that it needs some updating. The photocopier at reception, for example, is on its last legs. Bathrooms need some attention. But considering the cost, the great location and the helpful... More

Walking into the Fairlawn Hotel was like a childhood memory of a visit to an eccentric, eldery relative's house, but with everything "super-sized". Unprepossing from the road, the interior is far grander than you might expect and is replete with elegant colonial features. The decor is decidedly tired and you will either think it adds to the period charm or... More

Great experience and a step back in time to stay at Fairlawns. Staff friendly and helpful, although foodd could have been better - NOT a good cup of coffee. A novelty to have Afternoon Tea (complete with cucumber sandwiches) on offer as part of the price. Quite noisy room though overlooking a shopping street, with light shining through and Call... More

We visited before Christmas, nice atmosphere and beautifully decorated. Violet the owner is gorgeous, frail and requiring assistance now, you occasionally see her in the restaurant and around the place. Shower was cold but very quickly fixed. Friendly and helpful mostly, except for one waiter in the beer garden, was a bit rude when a friend joined us for a... More

I've been to India many times, but always in the South which is much more gentle and less poverty stricken than the North, so I've been told. I was surprised at how confontational I found Calcutta - the streets of the city are really shocking in their filth, poverty and decay. (I know this sounds pathetic - Tourist finds India... More

I and my wife were going to Darjeeling via Calcutta and we have stayed in this hotel. This place is super good in terms of the hospitality of the manager and the staff and the owner of this hotel is extremely appreciative. We had a nice and pleasant stay in this hotel. The bathroom is super good - neat and... More
