We stayed at the Chowringhee YMCA January 4-13, 2011 with a large group for a medical mission trip. Our pastor had managed to find this place for the group. This is the oldest YMCA in all of Asia, built in 1857, but it really doesn't look a day older than 1858!! The building is definitely old. There is no elevator, so we had to climb 107 steps every time we needed to get from street level to our room. We actually counted the number of steps. So, beware if you are bringing large suitcases!!
The room was spartan, I suppose: tile floor, several ceiling lights, two ceiling fans. No AC or heat. There was an armoire with 3 hangers. The view out the back window overlooked a tenement building where there were always people on the facing balcony talking loudly and intermittently yelling. So, we kept those windows and shutters closed. At night, there was a drunk YMCA staff member yelling. The staff lived on the level above us, so it was very easy to hear the noise...
