Similar to other reviews, the hotel was being renovated during stay. Rooms fine but bathrooms v basic. Also no curtains so light wakes you up early. Good value though. Englidh Tea rooms v good after hot day and nice views across bay, also Lady in Tourist very helpful more

The hotel was currently undergoing renovations when we stayed there. The rooms were okay but bathrooms were basic, still this is was an unrenovated room that we stayed in. Rooftop bar area was fabulous and a great spot for watching the sunset. more

The roof bar is probably the best bar I have been to in Sabah after living here for 2 years. It is totally relaxing with big day beds, comfy chairs and views over the south china sea. The food is ok price and the drink is not too expensive. The food does all come at different times though! Breakfast is... more

My husband and I also stayed at the Nak for one night following a jungle trip. While the hotel is definitely rundown, it has real character and a certain, if flawed, charm. Our room was quite clean, the air conditioning was powerful, and the bed was quite comfortable. Staff was friendly and helpful, and we were able to check in... more

We stayed at the Nak Hotel for one night on our way back from a river trip. The location is great - right in the middle of the city near the harbour and main bus station. Our room was huge with a large comfortable bed, lounges and separate bathroom and great air conditioning. It had real character and style -... more

Stayed here 2 nights. The hotel feels quite old . Hallways are dark and dismal and have a strange smell(?mildew). The room we had was basic but clean, and had 3 large, angled windows that provided a great view over the port. One wall was painted red which went with the overall red/Chinese theme of the hotel. Bamboo shades partially covered... more

The positives: Staff were friendly, the AC eventually cooled the room, and the rooftop bar was pretty good, and seems to be a hangout place for the young people in Sandakan. We had a couple of good drinks and the seafood bisque was surprisingly good. We stayed for less than 12 hours - in late one evening, out early the... more

Nak hotel was a real refreshing treat after touring most of Sandakan. It stands out from the neighboring buildings with its reds and its grandiose decor, remarkably so without looking pretentious. Service staff were always waiting on us and willing to go out of their way. Its rooftop bar was the most delightful part of our stay i must say.... more

I personally liked the place for it's quirky character, but there were too many setbacks for me to stay again. On the first night the lobby was completely flooded and there was nowhere I could go for food. On the morning of the second day water to the shower stopped. The people were nice but my wife hated the place... more

Management response from
antonngui, owner

The reclamation of the shoreline to create the new harbourfront (and hotels - while demolishing a few cultural relics like our old market) was not engineered well, leading to poor drainage systems affecting buildings behind the new structures. When it rains heavily, many shops and buildings in the old streets face a common 'flooding' problem. And this has only occurred...

I echo the comments made by eriktera. The rooms are shabby, especially the windows and the bathrooms. Although it is relatively cheap, it was still incredibly dated hotel. Breakfast was okay, and as others have commented, the roof bar (where breakfast is served) has a fantastic view over the ocean. I would perhaps recommend a 1 - 2 night stay... more
