I can't understand this place's popularity. I suspect a Lonely Planet recommendation has a lot to do with the foreign tourists it draws. It's a pretty awful and dirty place. We stayed here for three nights and it was a good stay. The owner was very helpful with everything from directions, restaurant recomendations and organising rickshaws. Wonderfully friendly backpacker hotel with a great location and reasonably priced, clean rooms. Lovely building, but the room we got was unpleasant. It was small, rather dirty, stuffy and hot - with a tiny fan that only affected half the bed. Close to the old city and to the market, Gangaram is a convenient place to stay in. The rooms however are extremely dirty and I am not sure anyone ever cleans them.
