I was shocked by some of the reviews this lovely hostel got. It is just above Otavalo with absolutely fascinating views over the town and Mount Imbabura! The staff is lovely, they help you with everything you need, the gardens are well kept, and who wouldn't like to spend some quality time in the company of Mark the Horse and Prince Charming the Llama, amongst all the other lovely animals on site. We had dinner 3 times and it was always delicious! The only thing I might suggest, if you are very tall, avoid booking the small cottage, which is otherwise the loveliest of all places, but you will struggle to fit into some places! 😉 Thank you very much for the wonderful 4 nights stay here!

Hosteria Rose Cottage is by far my favorite hostel I have ever visited! The staff was so incredibly sweet and immediately made us feel like family. The stunning views and quiet atmosphere was a welcome break in my month long trip across Ecuador with some rather noisy hostels in other cities. I adored the animals around, especially Prince Charming the llama! The staff will even give you a free ride down to the Otavalo Saturday market. I can’t wait to go back!

Stayed here as part of an organised group travel. The overall tour is targeted at the budget end of the market and as such this place did not come as any great surprise. I could not be as scathing as some other reviews of this place because as I said, I was not expecting much. The property is made up of a very eclectic group of little huts and building that do not appear to share to much in common. If you are hoping to be close to the town of Otavalo itself then you better rethink things. In my room you actually had to walk through the shower to get to the toilet. Perhaps a rating of 3/5 is alittle generous

Sorry you didnt enjoy our place. We checked with your tour leader and the other 17 people in your group were quite happy, enjoyed the good food and the jacuzzi, as well we hope as the beautiful views, our friendly animals and the countryside. People stay at our place to enjoy the peace and quiet and mountain air but its easy to get into town from us too, its a 25 cent bus ride or a pleasant 1 hour walk by the river. We have a variety of different accomodation and as you said your group chose the cheapest ($12 per night ppn incl tax and breakfast for the dorm room you stayed in). Several of our other houses are more upmarket with greater comfort, kingsize beds, fireplaces, living room etc. We encourage people who are thinking of booking with us to look at reviews from other websites like booking.com, where we currently have a score of 8.5 and the full range of accomodation we offer can be viewed.

I am completely dumbfounded on the postive reviews about this place, especially its mention in The Lonely Planet guidebook which, thus far, has proven to be a reliable source of guidance. We were excited to finish our trip on a high note here in Otavalo, but were there for less than an hour before we decided to take the $35 loss and book elsewhere due to poor accomedations. Don't let the picturesque marketing schematics of this place fool you, weary travelers. Pay attention to the cons mentioned in the other reviews (especially on Booking.com) because their all factual. As for Rose Cottage itself, it is pretty much brought to you by the owners most recent dumpster diving expedition. A severely rundown establishment in which the majority of the "grandmother's house" interiors are molded fake flowers, plastic white lawn chairs, and bedding from the 80s. For $35 a night, the bedroom we were given had noticeable mold-infested walls and furniture that were no finer than accomedations you'd find in the slums of Mumbai. The bed included torn sheets, rotted foam pillows, and a springy mattress with worn indentions of its former owners. Also, the door to our room had a doorknob on the outside, but not on the inside. Yeah, you read that right. We could only get in and out with the latch. And if you're above 5'7" inches tall, forget about staying here because you won't even be able to clear the doorways without smacking your head each time and knocking yourself out, if the smell of mold doesn't get you first. As all doorways are about 5 feet high - with a disasteful sign above them mentioning "mini-me used to live here." Really? Outside, the beautiful, roaming countryside view of the Andes (which is stunning FYI) are not a distraction to the raddy array of cottages and feces-filled grassy knolls from the many unkempt animals that inhabbit the grounds. Yes, there are plenty of pretty flowers planted everywhere (and I must give them snaps for their excellent botany choices), but the Llama was eating them. If you'd like a good picture of the mountains, be sure to take the wooden bridge to the lookout so long as you don't fall through like I did. About as bad as the garden pathways which consist of wobbly cement blocks above a running mote, which boggles my mind as to what that's all about. And if you are looking for a quick dip, please be sure to visit the algae-infested jacuzzi that may or may not house the creature from the black lagoon. Like "tennis," as it's advertised? It's table tenis, alright - they had me there. A ping pong table, minus any balls or paddles to play with. Like a playground for the kids? Be wary of dried, splintering wood of the swing and see-saw that will offer as much a thorn in your thigh as the place itself. There's also a frame to take IG pictures in to remind you and your followers of the dump you'll regret having booked if you decide to stay here. Due to a severe allergy to mold on my part, we couldn't stay. If this was the United States, the health department would shut this place down. The owner refused to give us a refund, which was expected, despite signing out not even an hour after we signed in. She was ornery and stingy, and though she offered us another room (fat chance), she was reluctant to call a taxi back to town for us due to her disgruntled objection over us leaving. We took the loss and found an incredible Airbnb in town instead. There are better hostels in Otavalo and I suggest seeking them out, folks. Rose Cottage tries way too hard to be the hip, cool granny's hang out and does a horrible job at it. If you ever wondered why Little Red Riding Hood never returned home from her visit to grandmother's Rose Cottage, it's not because the wolf ate her, it's because this place devoured her whole. And if you're wondering why I've chosen to be so snarky in my review, it's only because I decided to leave a review written in the same tonality and manner of low-level decorum the owner chooses to respond to her reviewers who leave behind constructive criticism. She flags one-star reviews.

We were shocked by your words which are nasty and wrong.Hundreds of people come each year to our place and love the beauty of the place, the animals, tennis court (yes there is one, but in your 40 minute stay evidently you never found it!) ,restaurant etc and most never write a review, but you have really gone to town with your foul language. Most guests love our garden with its views, Llama and other animals and we apologise the grounds were not up to our usual standard when you visited. We have had storm damage to one of our 7 houses (now fully repaired) which meant our gardener and staff had to focus on repairs when you visited. We completely reject your comments about the accomodation which is fine, and anyway offered to upgrade you free of charge from the cheapest room that you booked to a better room in another of our 7 different houses, but you declined to even look at it. We always offer guests an alternative room if they want one. As for you, our staff understood that one of you was suffering from altitude sickness and that was why you rushed away. About the cost, remember that you had a confirmed booking for 2 nights so paying for 1 night only for 2 people only seemed fair to us, especially as you cancelled your first day by email on the very day you were supposed to arrive. Visitors can reach us by bus for 35 cents each way as well as taxi, and we are in a great place for walks to the nearby Taxopamba falls or Laguna Mojanda as well as being close to Otavalo, so if you stay with us you get fresh mountain air and can easily be down in the bustling market minutes after.

Fantastic views of the beautiful countryside surrounding Otavalo - great base to explore the local area, including hikes to a nearby waterfall. Homely feel with lots of space to relax. Nice fresh fruit juice provided with breakfast and comforting, home cooked meals in the evening. The owner was very helpful and showed us around the town!

We made a reservation excited about the advertised beautiful property just out of town, but instead arrived to find disgustingly unkempt grounds, bare-bones and horrendous quality sleeping quarters, and rooms (including the dining area) with evidence of mold damage. Not at all up to our expectations, nor worth the money (which went snarkily unrefunded when we quickly turned around and found a cleaner place elsewhere an hour later). Also factor in a $4 taxi ride each way from town—not worth the hassle. If you’re looking for a relaxing getaway near Otavalo (or even just a place to lay your head for that matter) look elsewhere.

It's important to arrive before dark at this far-from-town, up-a-steep-stone-paved country road location. The place is not well lighted and the matron does not keep hours at a reception office -- you'll need to scour the property to track her down in her kitchen. This despite a conspicuous bell that one supposed to toll to summon help. Also, print out your reservation as they may not have a record of it. The place, from my view, is really one of a poorly-managed hostel. The grounds, which offer spectacular views and some sense of serenity, suffer from a lack of upkeep as do the sleeping areas. The dorm holds twelve beds for which a single toilet - single shower - single sink room is provided. You may not be provided hot water in the shower or a towel, which if you bother to ask about, requires descending a narrow steep set of stairs and ascending a grassy hill back to the matron's home all in the dark. A common bar of soap is provided at the both bath and sink whose room smells of mold. The breakfast is modest and if you inquire about a fruit supplement, in my case a small overripened banana, you may see the matron fly off the handle and go into a loud screed about U.S. sense of entitlement and Western imperialism.

I was here for two months recovering from a broke ankle and it was just and amazingly peaceful experience. The staff are all great. The breakfast is free. There is food available on the grounds. There are animals on the property. Just a great place to be in peace.

The site, the 360 degrees view on the field and the volcanoes, the big breakfasts, the facility to get in town and the way they took care of us. Located in the fields at 3 km from downtown Otavalo. A lot of trekking around the site, horse riding too, touristic counseling right on the site. They organized our transport to the airport by night. Everything was just WOW!
