At first glance, Piratas may not seem like much. However, don't let its looks deceive you! Piratas offers the absolute best experience you will find in Rio. To start with, location is everything. Ipanema beach is literally 1/2 block away, and Copacabana is just a few short blocks in the other direction. Piratas provides you with a bracelet for a... More

This hostel is vile, dirty, unclean BUT very fun and is suitable for people who don't care about anything but having a good time. I stayed during Carnaval as it was the cheapest option. We were in a huge dorm, think it sleeps about 25 people. All the beds were wrapped in bin bags because of the bed bug infestation,... More

Worst place ever. Worst than what you can imagine. The fact that stinks might not be too bad until you see cockroaches everywhere. This place should be inspected by the Brazilian health department.

Pros: - cheapest hostel in rio, 15 a night, less for hammocks/airmats or long stays. - incredible location, three blocks from either ipanema or - make some effort at having events, making a social environment, and the hostel is full of a colorful if motley collection of characters Cons: - as of Aug 11 they still have bedbugs - very... I had a great time at this hostel over Carnaval until I got bitten by bed bugs and the staff didnt really help me out which was suprising seeing as they had been so good over the first week or two organising activities and drinking with us etc. Me and everyone else who got bitten by bed bugs were treated... The cheapest hostel we could find, being on a budget was Piratas. We half knew what to expect, and weren't shocked at all by the ramshackle appearance or mess. It was a great place to meet people, an even better base (being slap bang in between Ipanema and Copacabana). The guys who work there were really helpful and easy to... More

Piratas is back to basics. Do not stay here if you're bothered by noise, water leaking through the ceiling or parties. But it's brilliant for meeting people, very communal and friendly and there's always something interesting going on. Bring some earplugs and be prepared not to get too much sleep! Great location, right between Ipanema and Cobacabana beaches. Supermarket, shops,... More

The accomodation is very very basic but there is a great atmosphere and the people are lovely. There are BBQ´s on Fridays and organised Favella Funk transport every Sunday. If you want a bed and a party atmosphere then stay here. The beaches are minutes away so it is amazing value for money. The bad reviews were probably written after... More
