We stayed here as part of a longer trip traveling throughout Japan. We booked a room with a Western bed and a private bathroom. The room was very basic, but clean and neat. The onsen in the basement was also very basic, almost clinical, but also very clean. They are quite strict about the eating times - we weren't offered... More

My husband and I stayed here for one night in early April, and wish we would have stayed longer! The location is on the grounds of Zenkoji Temple and very easy to find. The staff were very kind, and did their best to speak with us in English. We stayed in a traditional Japanese room which is set with a... More

Stayed in a traditional Japanese room with tatami mats and futon sleeping arrangements. The room was spacious and nicely appointed. The family that runs the place is very kind. The common bath is very small, but there were no other guests when we visited. If you have large bags, take the bus from the train station as it is an... More

This was my first experience in a ryokan and it was amazing! My fiance and I got the western style room and it was incredibly spacious! We had dinner and breakfast at the ryokan and both were excellent. The ryokan is right in the middle of the zenko-ji temple complex and is a great spot. Nagano can get quite cold,... More

My boyfriend and I stayed in this Ryokan for 4 nights last month. From the moment we arrived until we left, we were made to feel so welcome. Our room was traditional Japanese with roll out futon mattresses on the tatami mat floor. Each morning when we left, the staff would put away our bedding and bring out the traditional... More

I make no claims to be an expert on Japanese ryokans (traditional inns) but I have had the good fortune to travel to Japan many times and have stayed at a few, and on this basis submit the following review. The Matsuya is an absolute gem. While not low cost, it is certainly quite affordable. It is family run and... More

This is a great place to experience an authentic ryokan experience. You can catch the bus that heads towards Zenko-ji temple from right outside Nagano train station, it is a short 5 min bus ride to the temple entrance. The ryokan is located a short walk into the temple grounds on the left. The staff are very friendly and helpful,... More

I will admit that I am not an authority on Ryokans (this being my first time in Japan) but our stay at Matsuya was an unforgettable part of our trip. The food was absolutely amazing and there was so much of it! The staff speak little English but were extremely friendly and gave us gifts and fruit when we left.... More

What an amazing place. I have been to Japan several times, and stayed in a few Ryokans. This is by FAR the best of them. The location is AMAZING! Right in the ground of Zenko-ji temple. I got up at 6:30am and went to morning prayers - a 2 minute walk. Very special. The food was excellent - but too... More

This is a very traditional ryokan. The whole place is so Japanese. It's taken care by 2 elderly couple who don't speak English. But they understood us quite well when we communicated. The lady was quite fond of my son. She gave him small gifts and fruits. We took a cab to the ryokan. Cost 1210yen to reach there. The... More
