My wife and I were very happy with our stay at Motonago. It was easily the most expensive (23,100 Y / night for a double) accommodation during our stay in Japan but also one of the most memorable. The location is excellent (Gion- within five minutes walk from Yasaka pagoda / shrine) with 'Old Kyoto' at the door step. Walking... More

This is the most expensive accommodation we ever stayed! As it is so expensive, we only stayed for 1 night, and we both think is worth the experience. We took a taxi to the Motonago from Kyoto Station. The fare cost was about JPY1,300. Remembered to print our the map and showed it to the Taxi driver. The journey was... More

Very disappointed with the Motonago. It was certainly the most expensive and worst accommodation we had in 3 weeks in Japan. Luckily we only stayed 1 night - my wife would not have stayed longer and I still have not told her the price! We stayed upstairs and the room was small but OK. The washing facilities were more like... More

I know that I am going against the flow of positive reviews here, but I nevertheless have to say that Motonago was a disappointment in most respects...in fact, my wife's and my only disappointment in an otherwise wonderful trip to Tokyo, Kyoto and Hiroshima. By way of background, I travel a good amount overseas for work, especially in Asia, and... More

The best location to be if you are in Kyoto for the first time. Its an amazing ryokan experience. The staff is friendly and eager to please. The food is good but you should try outside as there are a lot of options available. Clean and comfortable. We got the ensuite with a small shared garden on the ground floor.... More

The Motonago is an amazing ryokan situated in a peaceful, traditional area of Kyoto, close to temples, shops and restaurants and a great walking area where you can walk down very quiet streets to the Heian shrine, Kiyomizudera temple etc in beautiful, peaceful surroundings. . The room was enormous-actually, three rooms linked by screens. The central room had a low... More

We loved our stay at Motonago. As soon as we arrived our hostess was very attentive to all of our needs. It is ideally located so that we had only a short but interesting walk to the gorgeous Kiyomizudera Temple. It was great experiencing all the different foods which were served for dinner. We were able to book the bath... More

Two nights at Motonago was our big splurge for our two-week Japan trip... twice as expensive as the other hotels we stayed in. But it was a great experience, and I'm glad we included it! The building itself doesn't radiate beauty or luxury in the usual ways that expensive hotels often do: the floors are simple tatami mats, the corridors... More

this is a tradtional Ryoken, Made comfortable with some mod cons in the room including aircon (great) and phone and tv (unnecessary!). Staff were extremely friendly even with no English. We missed out on dinner in the room as I didn't realize this has to be booked in advance, but had the traditional breakfast which was great. More

The Ryokan was addressed in the "Lonely Planet" to be one of the best and top addresses in Kyoto. The place is very nice and the service is exquisite but the building would require some upgrades and the promised internet access didn't work either. Be sure the test the "public" bath as it is outstanding and you are always using... More
