We stayed here for three nights in April 2012 and loved the tranquil environment of the temple complex. The meditation class offered by the English-speaking vice-abbot was very good, and free bicycle rentals were an added plus. I would not recommend the private rooms though unless you are a light sleeper, hard of hearing or don't care about audio privacy.... More

We stayed one night at Shunkoin and really appreciated the chance to stay in the amazing temple complex of which Shunkoin is a part. The temple is in a lovely part of Kyoto - we enjoyed walking to Kinkakuji and Ryoanji, and had a fantastic dinner at Raku Raku like many other reviewers. The complementary meditation class with Rev Taka... More

I spent nearly 2 weeks at Shunkoin Temple Guest House in 3/12 and it was perfect. One of the best aspects of staying here is the morning Zen Buddhist meditation sessions with Taka. He speaks excellent English and is a wealth of information about Kyoto, Japanese Rinzai Zen Buddhims and Japanese culture. Request one of the rooms with the bathroom... More

We were in Kyoto last week and stayed one night at the Shunko-in. It's located in a very vast temple ground and the surrounding is beautiful!! Very accessible from Kyoto station, and the best part was that the Rev. spoke perfect English!! The room is very clean and there is a shower (with good water pressure) and bathroom in the... More

Easy to get to from the Kyoto station. In peaceful surroundings. Very comfortable futons and great ensuite. Bathroom and toilet are almost brand new. Rev Taka gave us 2 adjoining rooms even though there are only 3 of us. We travelled with our 11 year old son. The a/c worked well and kept us warm and cosy. Kyoto was extremely... More

I stayed here for 5 nights last march looking for a tranquil experience. I was not disappointed. Walking through the huge complex of temples, Shunko-in is a welcome experience to a Westerner. Each morning Taka san led a 30 minute meditation with instructions in English followed by tea and cookies and a temple tour. In the evening, one can make... More

Our visit to Kyoto was made even more memorable with the unique experience of staying at Shunkoin temple, a place rich in history and imbued with deep spirituality. Initially, my friend and I stayed in a bedroom with ensuite toilet and bath for 3 nights. The room was spare but clean and comfortable with two futons and beaded pillows (which... More

We slept 2 of our 8 Kyoto nights at the Shunkoin temple, and I wish we had stayed a few more! The room is relatively simple, but very spacious, modern and clean: futons on the flooor, surprisingly comfortable firm bead pillows, writing desk and free WiFi. We appreciated the latter (and in a centuries old temple, no less) after a... More

If you're up for a break from the big hotel chains, or even from the boutique hotels, then you should definitely consider a stay at Shunko-in Temple Guest House in Kyoto. On the grounds of the Myoshin-ji Temple complex, this beautiful gem allows gusts to stay on the grounds of a Zen temple. Northwest of downtown Kyoto, the guest house... More

Shunkoin is a beautiful temple located in the heart of the large Zen temple complex of Myoshin-ji. Guests actually stay in the temple grounds. If you want to, you can get instruction in meditation practice, and sample the great green tea and Japanese treats. The temple is within walking distance of some great, fun places to eat like Raku Raku,... More
