Japan is a country rich in customs and history. If you seek an opportunity to experience Japan as the Japanese live, a Ryokan is a great way to do it. You sleep on Tatami mats, you share a bath and you dine on the floor. It is all part of the experience and there is no better experience than the... More

My wife and I used is charming ryokan as a base as we explored Nara and the surrounds. The owners of the place are very knowledgeable and helpful, which made our stay even more enjoyable. The rooms, while simple, are clean and matched our needs. The breakfast, western or Japanese, was fantastic (not included in room fee). It is centrally... More

We stayed for 3 nights with my family (we have 2 small children). We received a friendly welcome and shown our room which was spacious enough for the 4 of us, clean as always in Japan and the duvet nice and soft. Worth mentioning, our room was fitted with a sink and toilet ( quite rare in ryokans). Another advantage... More

The Ryokan is simple but very clean and nice. I booked through a website which only booked the room as a twin, but the owner told me to cancel and booked me directly and got a discount as I was only one person The owner is incredibly helpful, helping me find the things I wanted to do and telling me... This Ryokan is a stones throw away from all the main attractions you'll want to see in Nara, and a 5 minute walk to the famous deer park. Getting there was a bit of a hassle as the JR station is located a good 15 minutes walk (no fun with heavy bags!), and cabs tend to be prohibitively expensive. Theres... More

This ryokan is, IIRC, built into a three story modern building. The building is well kept. My single was approximately 3x3m tatami room, with an attached bathroom. As typical in ryokans, public bathing by sex at different times; note that soaking (Japanese often shower briefly and then soak in hot water for a while) is available only in the evening... More

We felt incredibly well looked after when we stayed here for the night. The room was big and comfortable and the owner was very helpful, and gave us some great tips on the area. There's a washing machine and dryer and an Onsen. Lovely Japanese breakfast too.

We spent 3 nights in Nara at Ryokan Matsumae as a family of 4 and had a wonderful experience. Our room upstairs was effectively a double with plenty of space for people and luggage. A much larger setup than we had in Kyoto, as nice as that accom was. Matsumae is very central to the old part of Nara, and... More

The moment you remove your street shoes and don your slippers you know you are entering an alternate universe of calm and civility. The genial hostess of the Ryokan Matsumae takes pains to welcome and teach. Located in the heart of Nara, just steps away from the Buddhist temples and the low wooden houses of the old city, this Japanese... More

My friend and I stayed for one night and we were thrilled with the hospitality and cleanliness of the ryokan. The futon beds have a top layer and were very comfortable, with a traditional 'bean' pillow. There is a shared bath that was very clean and the western breakfast was delicious. It was fruit and yogurt, cereal and milk, coffee... More
