Let's be frank, I am a lover of all things traditional. Thus, it didn't take me too long to decide on this most prestigious and historical hotel in Nikko. Being first time visitors to Nikko, we took the Tobu line from the Tobu-Asakausa station in Tokyo to the Tobu-Nikko station, journey was 1 hour and 45 minutes. Then a short... more

This is a historical place. It was built back in the time when the Japanese were trying to marry the traditional Japanese architecture with the western architecture. That is why the furniture and the decorations may seem a bit strange to the eyes of foreigners, but it is very typical of buildings of this era. Obviously the owners are very... more

We stayed for 2 nights and had a B-Style room on the 3rd floor with a nice queen bed, fairly large, facing the garden and mountains, nice views. The hotel feels very 'historic', somewhat outdated I guess; and many things are quite funky, to say the least, but if you are into 'experiences' this place is a good choice. The... more

This is a lovely old building in a great setting. The rooms are large and have some very nice historic features and great views. Slightly puzzled about the terrible reviews this place has been getting. Sure, it's a million miles from a sparkling new boutique hotel, but if you stay in a historic building you should expect things to be... more

I don't know why some people are rating this hotel so highly; it is a stinker--literally. One of the first sensory assaults is the foul smell emanating from the hallways, which only gets worse when you enter your musty old room. The room itself is of the type where you don't really want to have to touch anything--all worn, aged... more

I was really looking forward to my weekend in Nikko and decided to make the occasion very special and splash out. However, I was shocked and very disappointed by the condition of the room I was offered. The furniture was shabby, the laminate was peeling off the furniture, there was mold on the walls, and the AC was held together... more

Stayed here as a single female traveller wanting to visit the local shrines after a conference in Yokohama - and wasn't disappointed by the hotel - or the shrines in the National Park a two minute walk away from the hotel. Traditionally furnished double room spotless though old, which added to the charm. The view from the room (#22) was... more

Got a better price for off season, but I wouldn't stay here for the full price during the the peak season. Hotel is very classic and nice, but if you like to stay in the luxury hotels, don't stay here. It's for someone who'd enjoy the historical atmosphere. Exhibitions in the hotel are interesting. Breakfast was good, especially the famous... more

What a nightmare! We paid 330 a night for a third floor walk-up (no elevator) that smelled horribly of Mildew. The satin bed covers were ratty, old and stained. Unfortunately, they were also the only "comforters" available. The hotel had last been renovated in 1971 and was falling apart. It must have been a beautiful place once but the owners,... more

We had a hard time getting a room at this historic hotel. When I first called, emailed and faxed about eight months in advance, I was told there was nothing available. But then I got a Japanese colleague involved, she called a travel agent and we immediately were given what they said was the best room in the house (... more
