This was my first experience at a ryokan and this was an amazing place. The staff were really friendly and the suite if rooms was huge, having a seated area, a sleeping area, toilet and shower room as well as a balcony. It is located in the unesco old heritage area of Nikko and the temples are only short walk... More

This was our first time in a ryokan. That alone made everything special. My girlfriend espescially liked that she didn't have to take a public bath with a bunch of strangers. The ryokan offers the possibility to take a private bath for up to one hour. Also the breakfast is great. You can order 'Japanese breakfast' and 'Western breakfast'. I... More

We loved Nikko Tokanso, mainly because of Ayako, who does everything to make guests feel welcome and comfortable. She is the only employee who can speak some English... the others cannot, so you have to wait to speak to her if you cannot speak Japanese. Our room was very clean, spacious and comfortable. The breakfasts and dinners were wonderful and... More

Simple ryokan, more like a youth hostel, located near the shrines but far from the main street with all meal options. The furniture was old and injured, but the room - big and clean. Private bath was more a bathtub together with laundry machines, not so pleasant. The breakfast was good and for reasonable price. Reception lady was very friendly... More

Ryokan Nikko Tokanso is located near temple area in Nikko, which makes sightseeing temples very easy. It also means, that Nikko Tokanso is some 2 kilometres away from train station, and wlking there is slightly uphill, but we did not mind the walk, as we saw centre of Nikko town at the same time. Nikko Tokanso also has shuttle service... More

In deed, Tokanso hotel has shuttle bus service from the station, but the night before we stayed another hotel in Nikko, which was much better than Tokanso, but unfortunately it was full and we had to change our hotel and go to Tokanso. According to map, it had a short distance and we decided to walk to Tokanso Hotel. Eventhough... More

We stayed here one night, and had no complaints. The Ryokan is fairly easy to find, and the sight-seeing temples are just a short walk away. Our room was actually very large for such an inexpensive ryokan, and if you opened the windows you can faintly hear the waterfalls. Our only small nit-pick is that the spa or public bath... More

Having the JR pass, we went to Nikko via the Shinkansen to Utsunomiya (bound for Fukushima!). There, we took the regional train to Nikko: just follow the huge signs on the floor to get to the appropriate platform. In Nikko, we went to Tokanso. It is a ryokan situated at the beginning of the woods, and the start of the... More

Stayed @ nikko Tokanso for 1 night on 09062012. Location wise was a bit far from the Nikko Railway station, but that was not an issue. Could just take a bus and alight at the 'red bridge' stop and walk up, which takes about 5-10mins. Service was excellent, and the room that i gotten is on the first floor facing... More

Ryokans are expensive. Tokanso was a little over 200 a night for two people. Its a nice enough place, with decent size rooms and clean enough as well, but nothing to write home about. I can see tho how they can be expensive tho, breakfast and dinner are pretty filling with lots of food and a great variety and actually... More
