We stayed here for two nights here on April. Amazing food, excellent customer service. We wish we could stay longer!! The meals were soo good. I don't usually eat much but while my stay I can eat three bowl of rices!! Our deal included dinner and breakfast!! Would highly recommend and will return if we visited this lovely small town again!!

Our stay in Takayama at Oyado Yamakyu was excellent. The ryokan was easy to find - there were signs in English directing you once you got close. The location was excellent - within walking distance to the station (12 mins), right near tons of temples and close to the shopping streets. The owner was extremely nice and helpful and everyone... We stayed here in Takayama in January 2013. Let me start by saying that this was postcard perfect at every turn and its almost like time stood still here - a must see destination. We're a family of five with 3 older children. We stayed in Oyado Yamakyu and were not disappointed, it was homely, welcoming, very traditional. We had... More

Stayed here for 1 night in April with a friend we had originally booked two nights at another inn, but because of the high reating on trio advisor we decided to have a night here. Located too far from the train station to lug our bag. They do have a free pick up service from the station, but there was... More

If as a westerner you accept you don't stay at a ryokan for western style comfort (sitting on the floor, hard futons, shared bathroom/onsen downstairs) then this is a great place to stay. The rooms are of a reasonable size for a ryokan, there is an ensuite toilet and washbasin. The staff are extremely helpful and there are plenty of... More

We travelled around Japan for 15 days and Yamakyu was definitely our best choice of accommodation. Food 'cooked by local mothers', as described on their website, is an experience of its own. You always feel welcome and everybody tried their best to be helpful, even with some language barrier (though English-speaking members of staff were invited when needed). Sleeping on... More

My wife and I always depend on TripAdvisor in planning travel. We are never disappointed. This time, the Yamakyu in Takayama exceeded all expectations which, from previous reviews, were already pretty high. Owner, Eiji Yamashita-SAN, works alongside his most friendly and capable staff to provide the perfect environment and range of services for a perfect stay. Komichi met us at... More

We last stayed with Yamakyu in Oct 2012 and our stay here in this ryokan impressed us with its fantastic warm hospitality, reasonable half board rate that we decided to return during the Spring Festival from 14-16 Apr. For the period of the spring festival we paid Y8500 pp on half board. We arrived by train from Kyoto and due... More

We loved staying here, we stayed for 2nights it was a welcome respite from the intensity of Tokyo. Arriving at the train station to see the smiling face of the lovely japanese man holding up a sign ready to transfer us to the ryokan was a great welcome. He gave us alot of useful information whilst driving us to the... More

Takayama is well worth a visit if you want to see a side of Japan that isn't crazy cities and this B&B would definatley be the one to stay at.
