Take a Taxi from station when you first arrive (not easy to find, otherwise), but once you are there getting around Takayama is really easy. Sumiyoshi Ryokan is quietly brilliant. The hosts are simply the best. Warm, inviting, helpful and generous. Went out of their way to enable WI FI for us. Even helped us dress in the Yakutas provided.... More

We chose this ryokan by chance when we booked this part of our holiday. We were so glad we stayed here. We are actually on the train leaving Takayama now but thought I'd post our thoughts while we can. The warmth and hospitality of the hosts and staff here were the highlight. They made us feel welcomed from the start... More

Everything from booking to the actual stay was easy, smooth, and nothing could be any trouble to our hosts! The food was fantastic, and the service was outstanding. The hosts were warm, inviting, and you really felt as though you were their honored guest, or even part of the family. We ate breakfast for 2 mornings and dinner for one... More

Located right on the river, with rooms that overlook the yayoi bridge and river, this historic converted merchant house is worth every cent you pay to stay here. The staff were wonderful and the rooms were gorgeous - lots of antiques everywhere and big picture windows overlooking the window. Each room has a kotatsu (a Japanese heater located under a... More

Takayama is a lovely, historic small city, and a great base for exploring the southern end of the Japanese Alps, but it's almost worth going there just to stay at this ryokan. As I discoverd from trip planning, an authentic ryokan can cost as much or more as a high-end luxury hotel. Given the moderate price (by Japanese standards) my... More

My wife and I spent two nights at the Sumiyoshi Ryokan and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The ryokan is about a 20 minute walk from the train station and is located right on the bank of the river. We were enthusiastically greeted when we first arrived and wished my wife a happy birthday which I had mentioned in my reservation... More

Traditional ryokan decorated with Japanese antique decoration. We had a Riku room which is huge. The room comprises of three rooms - one living room and two bedrooms - together with two TVs, tea making amenity, mini fridge, safety box and two air conditioners. The best part of the ryokan is superb service from staff. They can also speak little... More

Everything's was perfect from room accommodation, dinners and breakfasts to staff helpful and friendly. Family room was perfect, bathroom with hot spring tub was a more than welcomed treat at the end of days spent visiting temples. Our kids enjoyed all the traditional and out of time experience and still now they're remembering how fantastic it was. A big thank... More

During out trip to Japan, we wanted to experience a more traditional stay in a Ryokan. We'd heard some good things about this Ryokan so thought it would make a nice break from the big cities and throngs of people to go somewhere more peaceful. We arrived at Takayama at night and it was a bit of a surprise from... More

It was an amazing traditional experience. I would probably put it down as more of a minshuki than a ryokan. A real family feel about it. Staff tried their best to communicate in english and they interacted with my 9 yr old son wonderfully. Fantastic hospitality. Great onsen which you could use privately by locking the doors. The place is... More
