Stayed 3 nights during the spring Takayama festival (not to be missed) so booking well ahead is essential. The information booth at station convinced us that taxi not necessary to get to hotel and indeed correct, about 5-10 minutes and easily accessed down a side street from one of main thorough fares. A modern exterior hides a traditional Ryokan inside.... More

This was our first ever ryokan experience, and it was a lovely one! It was only a five minute walk from the station, not to far to wheel our bags. Although the staff did not speak English well, and I do not speak Japanese well, we managed to communicate well enough, he even has picture/word cards prepared to answer your... More

It is a big impressed for my first stay at ryokan. The room is decorated nicely in traditional japanese style. I was worried about the futon that it might be thin and not comfortable for sleep, but I slept so well at Hodakaso Yamanoiori. The provision of hot green tea plus some rice crackers made me feel the real Japan.... More

This place is very close to the train and bus station. The room is very nicely presented with welcome tea and snacks. The onsen is quite nice as well. Service was exceptional. The breakfast experience was very good. Didn't get a chance to book the dinner, but I understand it is very traditional and nice. Overall, very good value for... More

This smallish onsen hotel was a five minute walk from Takayama station and reasonably priced at 4500 yen including breakfast: we had the Japanese style breakfast, which is essentially unlimited miso soup and rice, an egg, and a primitive-style miso-and-onion grilled on a leaf. There is also a western breakfast, and a Hida beef dinner is an option for a... More

It is true that the property is NOT brand spanking new, but it is incredibly clean and run by the most genuinely nice people who will accommodate your every request. Our room was sort of a mix of a japanese/western room and was airy and clean. We were welcome with warm green tea (pretty standard in ryokans and hotels) but... More

Over 3 trips to Japan, increasing my accom. spend each time (no longer hostel budget), I finally opted for a genuine ryokan, that seemed reasonably priced! I got it right! This place is definitely a bit dated, but I wasn't looking for 5 star polish...rustic suits me. I was travelling with my 70+yo parents and wanted to give them a... More

We travel to Japan from 1st May and left on 14th May, staying 6 different hotel and ryokan during our trip. JTB Malaysia assisted us to book this Ryokan, Hodakaso Yama-no Iori. Oh My God!! A totally splendid and unforgetable experience. In my 14 days of Japan trip, I could not forget abt the food in this ryokan, the friendliness... More

Overall I find the food in this ryokan more rustic and less tasty than the other ryokans I have been previously visited. The ryokan was a bit old, but the service of the place, like many other Japanese ryokans, were very very good. The ryokan also have a public bath with spring water from Takayama, which apparently is good for... More
