I arrived at the Retreat and within minutes I was amongst friends. I stayed for three weeks and cant wait to go back end Feb for three months or more. It was like being at home except I didn't do the washing up. Good food at reasonable price, friendly staff and good hosts. See ya soon folks more

Third year in a row we have stayed here, only 200 mtrs to the inlaws. Great place, very good meals and excellent service, we took the bigger room this time, not too far to town if you have own transport and not too far in a tuk-tuk if you haven't. more

I've been staying at the Retreat for the past 5 months, on a monthly rate - just 4000bt. My uncle Tom wrote a review when we first got here in March. After 5 months you could say I know the place and the staff pretty well. The Retreat is very professionally run, the staff have all been here over a... more

There is little peace and quite as the walls are thin with dogs barking all night and then bells chime early in the morning. We were also extremely disappointed that the "room" was very small, just enough for a smallish double bed with the just enough room to walk around the two sides and bottom. I found it quite bizarre... more

Most buildings in Thailand (house/condo/hotel) use single block walls, not the insulated cavity type that we're use to in the western world. As for the size of the room, state of clostophobia cannot be argued we all have our limits, the size of the room is 4m x 4m with a 5' bed pretty much centred, wardrobe and ensuite are...

I travel to Udon every 3 months or so, and am so glad I found this little bit of heaven. They run the place so professionally, not the usual, "sorry we don't have that", or usual errors I'm use to from other small businesses in Thailand. The staff have all been there for a long time now, and seem to... more

I stayed for 8 nights towards the end of March 2009. The rooms are comfortable and kept very clean by the very efficient staff. Glyn who designed and built the resort runs a very friendly well managed place. The bar prices for food and drink are very reasonable. The pool is kept very clean and there is a gym with sufficient... more

Thanks for your kind words Tom, the pleasure was all ours. Quiz nights are off until the new year. It is possible to negotiate a tuk-tuk for 100bt, they generally ask 120bt, I know you were rewarding them 150bt - you're a very generous person.

The Englishman's Retreat, unlike its serene name is anything but relaxing. The eccentric owner treats guests as an imposition on his private kingdom. You will find rules posted everywhere about everything and you will face constant confrontation by him and his staff. You will be prepaying your entire reservation in advance, then after you have paid, you will be asked... more

The real reason for this poor review seems to have been eliminated. If you rent a motorbike, you are responsible for the upkeep of that bike, punctures are always repaired by the user (not the owner). On return of the bike you must return the fuel level to the same as when you collected the bike. As the reviewer writes,...

A real peach of a place to stay nice rooms loverly pool nice quite area. Alittle out of town but only takes 10 mins to get there. Food is great , the bar is good with a nice atmosphere. Only down point is that Glyn does everything while his wife just sits there talking to her Thai friends and ignores... more

I am so sorry the author feels this way. In my defence I am a house-wife with 2 children and don't really get involved with the day-to-day running of the guesthouse, our uniformed staff are always sufficient and efficient enough to handle the daily tasks, we also have a shift manager on duty. So if I'm seen at the bar...

Stayed in Udon Thani for about a week and stayed at the Englishman`s Retreat for the whole time. Got picked up and dropped off by Glen who is the owner of the place and a great bloke. The place was reasonably priced, loved the food and the service was great. I would recommend it to anyone staying in Udon Thani... more
