A set piece turn of the century jewel filled with miscellanea from the adjacent Temple of Baal and the visiting archaeological expeditions that have used this hotel as their base for the last 100 years. Character and grandeur, food good- if basic, staff helpful but not great English and bemused american fellow visitors not quite getting it. Not the best... More

It's everything you've read about. Rooms were very clean but very old and tired. Taps not working, toilets not flushing properly, shower off wall etc. Breakfast adequate at best. Staff were part of the fun in this quirky place. It felt like a scene from the munsters at times. Room was very hot even though cool outside. No fans or... More

Wanted to love this place but... I was supposed to be booked for a single but arrived to find the booking lost and a group in residence which meant I was expected to pay #100 for a double (without b'fast). No hot water and no heating even though building was icy cold - the group leader complained and they were... More

We stayed one night in this “passé” hotel, and thought it was marvellous. The hotel is located opposite of the ruins of Baalbeck with the impressing columns of the Jupiter temple well visible. The bellboy was so old that we carried our own suitcases. We thought he might drop dead on the spot if he even tried to lift our... More

The hotel is a gem. It has not been refurbished in many decades and is decaying but is full of history and is a step back to a bygone era. If you expect televisions, air conditioning and a good night's sleep, don't stay here. But if you want an unique experience that you will never forget, go. More

It is very difficult to rate this hotel: it has a lot of charme and an amazing atmosphere, but it is really falling apart. Overall, I would recommend it if you travel during the summer, but avoid it in winter because I would not trust its heating system and hot water is available randomly (generally in the morning only). PROS... More

A wonderful hotel; within minutes after arriving I regretted that I booked only one night there (to some extent this decision was also based on the many negative reviews for this hotel). Apart from being a legend the hotel is a living museum and a place which will let you travel back in time. The hotel is full of antiques... More

We decided to stay at the Palmyra, despite its relative expense ($84/night), because Lonely Planet recommended it, because of its historical fame, and because it was convenient for their restaurant (which turned out to be closed for dinner, and we declined breakfast at an excessive $7 each), and bar (freezing, entirely deserted, and dark - someone turned on the light... I would love to have seen this hotel in its heyday - obviously it was something special - but today, it is need of a lot of TLC. The positives are that the breakfast was ok, the location is ideal if you want to see the Baalbeck site from your hotel and it's just minutes walk away. However, I think... More

I am very surprised that this is Lonely Planets reccommended hotel in their Lebanon guide. Yes it is 'atmospheric' and frankly pretty weird but at $50 a night to have no hot water morning or evening is too basic. It's actually rather creepy at night especially with no other guests around and the view of the ruins isn't that special.... More
