So it's not the most luxurious, comfortable, or even the cleanest hotel that you'll ever have the joy of staying in. The paint is peeling from the walls and the breakfast is a cold hard boiled egg, rolls and apricot jam. But what a wonderful place to experience despite all that, simply oozing period atmosphere and reminiscent of grander times... more

We enjoyed our stay here ... I was in Charles Lindbergh's room and my son in King Faisal's room ... both comfortable, with big old bathrooms etc. The manager was lovely and a real old character ... very helpful with changing cash and mending my son's glasses ... worth going just for that ! Do beware that you have to... more

The whole thing about the Baron Hotel is about history, atmosphere, romance, eccentricity. My friend and I had Room 203, where Agatha Christie stayed, and it was my 61st birthday that night. The beds were blissfully comfortable, and it was the only proper bath we had for three weeks in Syria. So what if the electrics and water pipes were... more

Don't believe the guidebooks. All of the rooms have been renovated and whilst it's a bit pricey ($70 - $80) lots of the reportedly cheaper (and soulless) hotels in Aleppo are now similarly priced. It's an incredible place and not to be missed. more

I was there in summer of 1982 - the drop-down mwnu for rating doesn't allow that date. The place is old, dustry, grey, but it breathes history. And - despite the heat there, the rooms stay conveniently cool. It is a place you visit only if you are interested in the Middle East's past - Agatha Christie spent some time... more

I think this comment from another reviewer bears repeating: 'Tourists can stay at the Sheraton. Explorers must stay at Baron's Hotel.' Some people just don't belong at the Baron and should steer clear. Better yet, go back to Dubai where you'll be right at home. more

Tourists can stay at the Sheraton. Explorers must stay at Baron's Hotel. Ignore anyone who complains it is old, or dusty, or a little bit shambolic - that's the point. A century's-worth of famous names in the guest book and an interior last smartened up around 1950 all add to the atmosphere. The airconditioning in the rooms works, the beds... more

We arrived at the Baron late one unusually hot night in April in unexpected style - our sleeper train from Constantinople had been delayed at the Syrian border for some six hours and we had been worried that we would have difficulty finding the hotel, and even keeping our rooms (note to all potential travellers to Syria, especially American trustafarians... more

The 1909-opened Baron Hotel is the most famous hotel in Aleppo and was once on of the most famoius hotels anywhere in the Middle East. Today, you can stay where Agatha Christie, T E Lawrence (of Arabia), Roosevelt and Attaturk (father of modern Turkey) stayed for just $60 a night or thereabouts. An absolute bargain, and it's deservedly a traveller's... more

Apart from the history (which can be fully enjoyed and viewed from visiting the bar in hotel lobby), staying as a guest in this hotel should be avoided at all costs. Dangerous electrical wiring and suspicious smells its a wonder this building is still standing and not burnt down. Breakfast is a joke. The condition of the decor and the... more
