The stairs are steep, as they are in all traditional Tibetan homes and monasteries so it is not suitable for more frail travelers or small children. We recently stayed at this heritage hotel for 4 nights. The location of the hotel is fantastic, footsteps away from Barkhor market and the dining and shopping that can be found there. The hotel is a renovated palace that was originally built for the parents of the 11th Dalai Lama in 1838. It is in a great location, a short walk from the Jokhang and Barkhor. The beauty, the food, the exceptional location, the courteous, accommodating and exceptionally helpful staff - there was nothing to tarnish our stay in the 11th Dalai Lama's family residence. It served as a wonderful introduction to an amazing country. All I can say is thank you.

This hotel was the home of the 11th Dalai Lama's family and was recently restored. I had the suite which was gigantic and incredibly beautiful tibetan style with a modern bathroom.
