Lovely setting and views but many of the guests including us were distressed by the absence of doors on the toilets. The owner/designer Jim Spear said, 'We get a lot of French guests who love this.' Well, I'm not French and I didn't love it. 'We make it clear on our website,' Mr Spear said. Silly me, I'd interpreted 'open... More

Dear ChinaGirlX, Your review misrepresented the content of the conversation I conducted with your husband about the Brickyard's design and unfairly made me seem flippant. I've checked with our team and I know that how you've reported on other experiences here is also suspect. You should really be ashamed of yourself for headlining your review the way you did. We... My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our mini-vacation (one day) at the Brickyard Inn. Out room was esthetically pleasing and comfortable in all respects. The staff was terrific from when we arrived until when we left. We recieved good suggestions for our hike up to the Great Wall and enjoyed interesting conversations at the end of the evening while we... More

Four of us spent Mothers' Day weekend there and loved every minute. Free transfers by mini-bus to the Great Wall was an added bonus. Friendly helpful staff and great buffet breakfasts, Only negative was a recommendation to go to the Schoolyard for a "Fine Dining" evening, which was an expensive and disappointing experience. Have already recommended these accommodations to friends... More

Our stay here was perfect. The rooms are great, the service flawless. But it is more than a superb hotel. This is an extraordinary model of integration into the local community. Western investment is pouring into urban China and young people are being drawn away from their communities. So local areas such as this need investment to avoid their populations... More

I had read about the Brickyard and School House in an in-flight magazine several years ago. My expectations were exceeded from the moment of my first enquiry. Lauren Tang Spear, the daughter of the man who concieved the concept was prompt in her replies and provided detailed and helpful information along the way (including wonderful directions for a walk between... Going to the Great Wall is a bit of a trek from Beijing. So, the usual experience is that you spend a couple hours hiking up, take a bunch of pictures, buy some souvenirs and return home. Taking friends who had just arrived in China after a long journey, I wanted a place that where we could all relax and... More

A fantastic place to kick off our holidays in China. Location is great and many walks are possible from the Brickyard---from the very easy:walks in the village; to moderate: walk to the next village for fishing(and eating); to the nearly impossible: up onto the Great Wall! Very friendly staff and food is fantastic! Note: they only serve western, so not... More

This is a unique property, one that offers perhaps the greatest luxury for a traveler in China: peace and quiet. I visited in March, and I was happy to get away from the frenzy of Beijing at spend a quiet evening in front of the fire, chatting with my fellow guests. The next morning I realized I could see the... More

This hotel was a pleasure to stay at, from the moment we walked in. Staff were friendly and helpful, facilities were great and we had been well-informed about facilities well before we arrived. We had a great experience at The Brickyard!

Positives: car to and from Beijing came on time, the inn's architecture and location is great (you have a view of the wall from your terrace/bed), Easter brunch was great and the staff put in a lot of effort to make it nice Negatives: management of staff. There's only one person in charge of everything, Lauren. She picks up a... More

Dear Irene B, This is Jim Spear. We appreciate your frank review. You stayed with us on our Easter package, which included roundtrip private transfers from Beijing, a night in the Brickyard, homemade buffet breakfast in the lodge, complimentary local transportation, complimentary coffee, tea, soft drinks (including Laoshan water in glass bottles -- we don't serve plastic bottled water), and...
