This was one of the worst (bar Silvia and possibly Turbo) rooms we have stayed in all trip. It had such an overpowering smell of damp that the first thing I did was go out and buy joss sticks and burnt several to try and overpower the dreadful smell. Not only was it smelly it was also cold, dark, damp... More

We stayed at the Platypus for two weeks and found the owner to be the best we have ever stayed with. The rooms and bathrooms were basic but always very clean.Breakfast is included in the price and there is free coffee all day.All in all a great stay.

Stayed over on a couple of occasions as booked and doing Airport stopovers. Good points is location to bars etc, cheapish and a 25k peso ride from airport. Bad, cold and feels damp due to this. Matresses so uncomfortable double bed room 7. Staff seem uninterested defininetly no cheery smile or welcome. However met the owner who is very nice,... More

This place is also highly recommended in my Footprint-Southamerika book. But I honestly think it is living on his past reputation. This place has by far the worst matresses I have ever slept on. The German owner "best source of information" is NEVER there. He has opened another Hotel. He has made his money and other people work now for... More

I was pretty surprised by this. While the staff was friendly with me, the other girls I was sharing the room with didn't have the same opinion. The dorm rooms weren't heated (the whole place is freezing!), and we all slept with layers on. I asked for an extra blanket but they said they didn't have any. But the closet... More

I have travelled around South America for many years, and have been and lived in Platypus for several months from 1999 to 2011 and I can assure that it the best hostel you can get. The staff is helpful and caring. The location safe and good. The owner German is not only the best source of information in Colombia, but... More

The Platypus really is a very poor hostel, made worse by the genuinely unhelpful and rude staff. We booked this hostel specifically due to reviews in guidebooks and websites that said the staff are helpful and have good knowledge of Bogota, but we found the opposite! The area is good and it feels safe, but we were in a ground... More

While this hostel might have been the first and one of the best at one time (I also stayed here about 5 years ago), I am quite sure this hostel is now coasting on it's Lonely Planet 'Our Pick' recommendation. It was full of disapointments... While the location is great, and the building itself is quite nice, it's really run... More

Platypus is well-situated in La Candelaria but the street is a little noisy - I think this is something hard to avoid in a city like Bogota. Staff are friendly and offer good advice. Rooms are basic but clean although a little cold. Great for many types of travellers and the hostel seems popular.

Advertised in the Lonely Planet as a party hostel and recommended for its good vibes, the hostel does not live up. By 11pm everyone is asleep and those who aren’t are being told to shut up or leave the hostel. There are two common areas, the dining room which is dark and where the wifi doesn’t really reach and the... More
