We stayed at Highway House with Norman and Stephanie, and cannot fault the excellent service we recieved and attention to detail. The house itself has been beautifully restored and furnished, and is an individually built arts and crafts house. From our arrival and tea and cake to Norman's suggestions of what do do and see in Ormaru,we cannot say enough... More

Through at first you may think not the best location, however once inside you can forget about that. Had a very warm welcome from Norman and Stephanie with afternoon tea and chat as others have mentioned. Breakfast the next morning was great with Norman pointing out points of interest for our onward trip.

My husband and I stayed at the Highway House for one night of our 16 night stay in NZ while on our honeymoon. Sorry Norman and Stephanie for the delay in getting our review up. The greeting given us by Norman and Stephanie when we arrived was one that made us feel immediately at home, safe and welcome. Norman and... More

Don’t be put off by the name or the location or even the picture – The house actually is very charming. The landscaping of the garden areas is lovely and stylish. We stayed there in 2010 and again in 2011. The hosts, Norman and Stephanie are very kind and thoughtful. They provide such impeccable service with charm. This is where... More

Lovely hosts 'Uncle Norman' and 'Aunty Stephanie', whom my 2 children dearly calls, meets more than your expectations. 4 of us travelled to Oamaru after many days of what seemed like an almost month-long trip to South Island, quite missing our homeland, Singapore. However, the warm greetings of the hosts immediately made us feel so at home - like returning... More

To be honest I was iffy at this place when I booked it from home. I had pictures of a dodgy hotel on the highway as you get on the cross country american movies, you know the ones with bikers staying there and flashing neon lights. How wrong my initial thoughts were. We were greeted by a delightful couple gardening... More

This really is a case study in how to run a B&B. Kind, engaging and helpful hosts with encyclopaedic local knowledge. I defy you to find a better breakfast practically anywhere worldwide. But you need to check which of the three rooms you will get. One is a double en-suite, one is a double with shared bathroom, one is a... More

Bognor's review of Highway House is very kind and I have acknowledged my gratitude to him. However, his reference to the Sun-Room as only suitable for "pixies" both insults the very many customers who have booked that room and, as an attempt at humour, will have resulted in our losing clients who could have well benefitted from that room. The... More
