Kaikoura Boutique Hotel is in a perfect spot on the esplanade. The old building is full of character and the newly refurbished rooms are spotless and stylish. Robyn and Peter are very friendly and keen to please their guests. The wine and canapés offered is a lovely touch. Other rooms and the restaurant are soon to be renovated and we... More

We had a wonderful time in Kaikoura and from the moment we arrived at The Kaikoura Boutique Hotel we felt so welcome. We were on our Honeymoon and traveled all the way around the South Island and staying in Kaikoura was our highlight. Peter greeted us and was very helpful, with in a few minutes we were booked in at... More

From the moment we arrived it was obvious this hotel is a labour of love for the owners Robyn and Peter. After showing us to our first floor suite Robyn explained that they are in the middle of a total renovation of the hotel. If the finished product is reflected in what they have already achieved we can`t wait to... More

This is an old hotel that has had some of its rooms renovated, however, it seems to have been done on the cheap, apart from the very comfortable bed. There is little storeage room, poor carpet, a TV that didnt work, a large bathroom with electric shower. Only single glazing in the windows. Not worth the $175 per night, despite... More

Thank you for your review. We pride ourselves on our historic hotel. We feel it is necessary to report that a specialised hotel Interior Designer designed the Courtyard Rooms, using bespoke furniture, Sleepyhead beds and top quality fittings and fixtures from respected NZ suppliers. The brand new flatscreen television necessitates the use of two controls, which can be confusing. We... More

Had a fabulous time and the Hotel is starting to undergo a huge change - we can see it in some of the rooms and we decided to stay in the upper floor apartment with the most accommodation. Great sea views and easy walking distance to town if needed. Although everything we required was under the one roof.................thank you for... More

This undiscovered gem of a hotel is situated on the Esplanade overlooking sparkling waters with mountain views as a backdrop (snow covered on the evening we were fortunate enough to stay there). Our delightful hosts, Peter and Robyn Smith, have created unique accommodation for discerning New Zealand and international travellers. Our two bedroomed, two bathroom suite was beautifully decorated, spotlessly... More

An excellent little hotel in a beautiful location on the beach.....enhanced by the friendliness of the owners and the staff. We were made to feel very welcome on arrival and felt more like family than guests throughout our 1 week stay. The high quality, gourmet food is highly recommended; a must for any visitor to the area.

The Kaikoura Boutique Hotel is a real gem! The new owners are charming people who have done a wonderful job refurbishing the old building. We felt welcome from the moment we entered the hotel. The location of the property is directly on the esplanade and their largest room faces the Pacific Ocean. It was simply wonderful to fall asleep with... More

We felt welcome the moment we walked in and the room was as promised in the reception, small but clean with thick towels and very hot shower. All for $70. Tv, microwave and even friendly cat Sparky! Bed had slats so was better & firmer than the usual terrible motel soft. Homely courtyard and quiet. Good directions to eating places... More

Please note that this review was posted in November 2010 when the property was known as Maxton's-on-the-Shore. In November 2011, new owners took over the property and extensive renovations have taken place. This historic waterfront hotel is now both luxurious and contemporary and is known as Kaikoura Boutique Hotel. More
